Urdu Star-spangled Banner

This poem is in response to Mr. Bush saying that the national anthem should be in English only. It would be like the recent immigrants do not exist, and their
language and culture are secondary to that of European immigrants.

Subh ki roshi chamkanay lagi

Jo chamka kiya tha jab sham dhali

Wohi seedhi safain, woh roshan sitaray, jo tareek shab
kay huay thay nazaray

Faseelon pay daikha keh lehra raha tha, bagoolon ki
barqay shihabi say roshan

Yehi ham nay daikha keh lehra raha tha

Kaho keh wohi ab bhi lehra raha hai

Watan pay jo azadion ka watan hai, yeh ghar jis may
rehtay hain baybak ho ke

Translation

O say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,

What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last
gleaming?

Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the
perilous fight,

O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly
streaming?

And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still
there.

O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
