The Ehtesaab Gold Medal

Nisar S Khara February 19, 1998

Tags: Law , Government , Karachi

On a written complaint regarding a blatant violation of a law of the land, a police party - headed by a young sub-inspector - raided the place of offence located at an "elite enclave", arrested the accused, and seized hard proof of the offence.

The offender
had violated a cognisable and non-bailable law having penalty upon conviction, up to 3 years RI or Rs 100,000 fine or both! Within 10 minutes of the arrest and action, entered a sitting Member Provincial Assembly who, with complete pomp and show, enacted the same drama which was reportedly played by late Mir Murtaza, at the famous Karachi CIA centre a year back. He got the "offender" out of the lock up, collected all seized evidence of offence, and walked out of police station triumphantly, but not before finishing his cup of tea, offered by the SHO and party, with their heads bowed and hands folded in "respect" for the VIP(Who says VIP culture is gone?)

This quick dispension of "ehtesaab" merits national "recognition" and "commendation" for relieving the state of the financial burden of going to court, appearing on so many "hearing dates", paying legal fees; it also saved the police from the hassle of preparing challans, alleviated the over-crowding problem of prisons. So what is it allowed certain "mayanaaz shehri" to continue with their own illegal business of constantly filling their coffers with ill-gotten loot - a mere fringe benefit. The MPA and SHO proved wrong, the old saying that "crime does not pay" (our government ought to nominate them for the Nobel Prize in the field of Sociology).

This episode shall also make people think of "equality"; an essential element of our society. Every one would love to become law violator as, not only does
crime pay, but the criminals get VIP treatment by the law enforcers! No one would like to be a law abiding citizen or an odd man out, thus bringing every one on one equal platform. Damn World opinion. Let them call us a society of criminals. What difference would it make? At least we shall live happily thereafter amid equality, as all would be above law, with no whining of social injustice!!!

However, this stage may come after some time (not in far future!). Till then, I, as a citizen of this land of the Pure, strongly recommend a national award for the great MPA and the gallant SHO along with his party, for a job well done. We must give full recognition to our heroes. Since I cannot think of any existing national award for this category, I suggest, a new national award be constituted and called, "THE EHTESAAB GOLD MEDAL". It should carry a cash reward in the form of a top international credit card having no pre-set limit on spending in any currency. The award should be given to these great men (and many others of their kind) in a simple (as the nation is poor) but grand (as we have double standards) ceremony, to be telecast live on PTV through satellite, after "Khabarnama".

This award would serve dual purpose; a recognition to our heroes and much needed publicity for Ehtesaab. I also strongly recommend that the said MPA be made "Chief Judge" of speedy trial courts (or ATC) and SHO as "Prosecutor In Chief". I can assure all, that this nation will have no problems with any kind of lawlessness, if my suggestions are agreed to. This would also relieve our Prime Minister and his colleagues from pending time trying to unravel the law & order situation.

Any objections to my suggestion? Is any one listening anywhere? Does anyone care?
