Old men sleep, as tired as trees,
While the sly young world scampers by.
There is no haste in the sound of their breathing,
No terror to grow to newer heights;
They know they are going to be forgotten.
So they rest, trees slumbering silently,
Oblivious to the noise of traffic
And pain and progress
that
Speaks a language they cannot know;
Time left their side so long ago.
