Behavioral approach of smoking among Youth

Sunny Sunny December 24, 2005

Tags:

Behavioral approach of smoking among teenager’s and youth is different from each other by several factors. Some key factors are maturity, social background, single parent family,
Discipline, motivation, role model, media exposure, society and government policy on educational awareness of smoking.

Age Distinctions:

People from different age have different reasons weather or not to smoke. It varies from plate farm of meting their needs which is different from one person to another because it’s a format set by a supreme power which is beyond of our imagination. This scenario is same in most case but not accurate because everybody has their own perception.

Age Groups:

1st) 12-15 Years Old:
People of those age start smoking mostly because of the media exposure, single parent family and person they look up to usually their father. If their father or a family member smokes they will most probably start smoking too. Teens are easily influenced by society and a morel background being setup.

We belong to the part of the world which is in developing phase so its not easy to make a descent living; not every body can afford to smoke. Our Media has provided this edge to our teens, and made smoking a status symbol. Teens tend to think it’s a luxury and to being superior from other they try to cover their fear by smoking.

Teens who thought their parents would disapprove of them smoking were less than half as likely to smoke as those who thought their parents didn’t care. This held true regardless of whether or not the parents were smokers themselves.

2nd) 15-20 Years old:
People belongs to this age group are some what mature. They usually smoke because of their surrounding environment, social background, media and lack of family attachment. They are also very similar to young teens up to some extent.

They are in process of changing from a teen to mature person so they are confused themselves; what to or not to do? So our media sets them an example by showing heroic advertisements on TV and movies on VHS/DVD/VCD’s. Media in not only thing that influence them; family attachment, how they are being raised up and have a proper guidance.

They tends to cope up with other’s and don’t make their own code of ethics. If a person is smoking so why not me? This kind of attitude is mostly present. This is not just their fault because they are dependent of their parents and so they are used to it. When being left childhood, can easily be misguided by friends, family, relatives. These close relationship can be vital, can take you on either way.

Social class is the last line on the lay out, tends to adopt a behavior to judge people by their social attributes. Which in results make a case of mental anxiety, to over come this boundary they look for things to overcome?

3rd) 20-25 Years Old:
They are the most sophisticated group among all we discussed. Their reason to smoke is to be well-known, exposure, look different from others. Which in other word is a complex? If you quit smoking in this age you will succeed but if you could then all mighty god helps you. People in this group are mature and adults and knows; what’s rite and wrong. They mostly smoke to release to pressure and mental stress. They belief that this 5 minute break will release tension.

Life as a Smoker:
Everyone knows that "smoking is bad for you". You know that if you start smoking that 1/3 of you will eventually die from it. And for the most part, that’s about all you know. Is this enough reason to not smoke?

Teenagers are immortal. Teenagers live forever. People’s perception of time is logarithmic and when your 18 a "half lifetime" is 9 years. Your parents are 2-3 half lifetimes older than you and your grandparents are 4-6 half lifetimes older than you and in your mind that is like eternity and beyond the scope of your imagination. Thus, in your mind, the health effect form smokings are so far off in the future that it’s beyond the limits of your imagination. However, there are a lot of other reasons to not smoke other than taking a chance with cancer and heart attacks. These reasons are actually a lot stronger and affect you a lot sooner and affect all smokers.

Life as an Addict:
Life as a smoker is a life of addiction. You can’t quit. You may think you can quit. You may live your whole life thinking you can quit. But the reality is, you can’t quit. Sure, some people do quit, but only through extreme effort. And even those who do quit are fighting to stay that way for the rest of their lives.

Once you are addicted you have to have it. There isn’t any choice because it’s compulsive. You will smoke. Resistance is futile. You don’t want to smoke. You wish you could quit. You intend to quit someday, but not today. Today you will smoke. And every time you smoke you’ll think back and wish you never started. Am I right? Talk to anyone who smokes. They will tell you themselves. Both smokers and non-smokers alike agree that a person who doesn’t smoke shouldn’t start.

When you get to smoking two packs a day your lifestyle will be greatly altered. You will find that no matter where you go the first thought will be, "Where do I have to go to smoke?" Every event in your life will be based around being in places where you are close enough to go somewhere to smoke. And if you are going somewhere where smoking isn’t permitted, the issue will be how long you will have to go without smoking and if the event is good enough to give up smoking for that period of time

Because smoking is addictive you are not really choosing if you are going to smoke or not. You are really choosing if you are going to become a smoker or not. Because most people who want to quit smoking can’t, you have to ask yourself this question, "What do I want to become? Do I want to be a smoker?"

Life is short. It’s may seem like forever when you’re young, but it’s just a blip and then your gone. During your life you will experience a lot of things and who you are and what you think about is what defines you as a person. You are what you think and what you do. Imagine if you will that at the end of your life that your thoughts are downloaded and put into a great database and sorted by category of thought and added up by time spent thinking about it. If you are a smoker, you will find that the number one activity in your life was either smoking or thinking about smoking.

Tobacco and Personal Appearance:
When you make your own decisions you take the responsibility of deciding your own future. If you make good decisions you are going to have a better future than if you make bad decisions. You are what you choose to be, so chose wisely.

Cigarettes are so addictive that you’ll even smoke when you’re sick. You can be in be coughing your head off and so sick you can barely get out of bed and you’ll still get up, put on a jacket, and go out on the front porch in the middle of winter to smoke one. If you wake up in the middle of the night needing a cigarette and you don’t have one, you’ll put on some clothes and drive to the nearest open store at 3:00 in the morning to get a pack.

Mental Awareness among Child:
To grow up is not only about making your own choices, but to take responsibility for the choices you make. What you do affects who you become and if you make bad choices, you will get bad results. You are at an age where the choices you make will affect the rest of your life. If you screw up it is you who are screwing up. You are faced with a great many things. Do I smoke? What do I want to be? What do I believe in? Who do I trust? What drugs should I try? Who will I marry? Do I want kids? Do I want to go to college? These are important decisions and if you realize that if you make wrong choice that you will have to live with the results, it is my hope that you will choose more carefully.

Conclusion:
In spite of all the health warnings, teenagers continue to get hooked on tobacco even though they all know that it’s bad for them. It is therefore logical to conclude that a shallow knowledge of the health risks is not enough to convince teenagers to not smoke. After all we come to know, one scenario applies to all discussion. i.e. one who has stronger veil, motivation, survival instincts, sets some rule to follow will overcome this social trend.

For instance, the criteria is always be the same weather you are a student or in Professional Life. Hard work, Commitment, Discipline, Achieving your goal, responsibility towards your task, setting up your goal and improvement is always been the key feature to success.

Let’s take student life for instance, when you step in to University that means you want to become successful and distinguished from others. Which is commitment? You sword out your degree plan, which is achieving your goal? How you will go through these years. Which is hard work? Learning from your mistakes. Which is improvement?

What I have experienced, if you undertake these set of commands everything will come to you in easy fashion. Committed approach can distinguish you from others.

The person, who is very well prepared for everything, has down homework and ready for challenges will make it through any kind of social or moral war.
