A translation of an Urdu poem by Parveen Shakir

Translation:

The glimmer of the red scarf corner in the soft green light
The fragrance of hot, intertwined, breaths in a cold room

A delicate body encircled in a strong embrace
Creases on the dress, the scarf’s corner also tilted

A cold wind set ablaze by the warmth of glowing cheeks
Gentle
fingers playing absently with soft tresses

A moment’s teasing reflected in scarlet lips
The occasional clink of a bangle on a velvety arm

Words of love spoken softly in somewhat embarrassed tones
A cry sounded loudly in the beating of two hearts

On trembling lips this prayer only to God:
If only these moments could be frozen, frozen for a while!
