Dina Wadia Claims Jinnah House

Basit Ghafoor June 22, 2005

Tags: jinnah

Most topical move by Dina Wadia, after watching the ODI between Pakistan and India, was to aver the rights of her father’s house. Claiming a house after fifty years doesn’t
sound chirpy, rather reminds me of a goof, one of the grandsons of the Mughal empire, who threatened to sue Government of Pakistan if the property under the Mughal’s was not handed over to him.

Jinnah house was built by Jinnah in 200,000 rupees, a huge sum at that time. It stands in an ascending decaying condition, but in the most expensive real estate market of India. Currently it is worth $10 Million, overlooking the sea. Once occupied by British High Commissioner, from 1948-1982, is now the bone of contention between two states. No more, a third claim is added to the contention.

Modern time vastly offers to negate the negative points, and promote positive thinking; addition of negative-ness not by a state, rather an individual makes
the mockery out of the whole situation. Spending a lifetime with parents, positive attitude towards them, being in their good books, usually earns one the share of his/her parents property. Our newspapers are full with notices, father abandoning his son, seems enough paper work forbidding him to indulge in his parents financial matters. In Pakistan, anyone who is premeditated in our system, can decree without reading newspaper, that Jinnah deserted Dina at the point when she decided to take alleyway against Islamic values.

Ideological differences between father and daughter to such an extent that a history can be made out of it, is what happened here. Jinnah who was first informed about tuberculosis, the disease which still takes nine months for a complete recovery, had no family member to be his support except Fatima Jinnah, at the time when he needed Dina the most. Daughters take over the status of son, when she is the only one; they become the support and courage of their father. Rather daughters pretend to lead parallel lives, in case they have differences with their parents, so not to hurt them. But this is not the case here.

Reminder of Jinnah, Dina Wadia, who now asserts to be in love with her father’s property should take example of Benazir Bhutto, who refused to attach Zardari’s name with hers, to reflect the intense love for her father, be it for political reasons, but masses vote for Benazir Bhutto. So should Dina Wadia, its time for her to change to Dina Jinnah, her original name be restored. Stanley Wolpert who took deep interest in Pakistani Politics, and wrote the most read about book on Jinnah, proved him to be the Quaid of people, was impressed by the association between Z A Bhutto and his daughter. Most memorable was Benazir’s visit to India with her father in the wake of 1971. Stanley Wolpert termed Dina as the sole comfort of Jinnah, who nicknamed her father "Grey Wolf", she was fond of theatre, as Wolpert
says she saw Punch and Judy with him. Infact the birth of Dina makes
one reminiscent about theatre. Quaid-e-Azam and Ruttie Jinnah were in
theatre when the urge forced them to leave their box. But this sole
comfort of Jinnah failed to become his soul.

Jinnah the great leader, the great speaker, had a little luck from his family,
mostly fought his wars alone, but with elegant style. Even his doodling used to reflect creativity. One fathoms, the disobedience by Dina might have nailed the mental think-tank of the leader, who had Fatima, his sister beside him every time he needed her, but couldn’t score for daughter’s love. You can’t survive when your breath is taken away from u, so how can u do that when your only daughter leaves you for a stranger.

Dina the creation of Jinnah, never liked the idea of his another creation, Pakistan. Even Nusli Wadia, Dina’s son was not in accord with the idea of living in Pakistan. He preferred Bombay, where publicly criticizing Jinnah is a certificate of scholarship. Grandson should come forward, accept the ideology of Jinnah and must shift to Karachi, the birth place of his Grand Father. The place where the name Jinnah, still earns highest degree of respect. But nor in his childhood nor in his adulthood, he wanted to stay in the most historical creation of his Grandpa.

But now Wadia family has a better idea, to occupy and build a house, which was once the landmark of Jinnah Nehru meetings, the place where the dream of Pakistan was materialized. The agony of the matter is, they still want the house not the soul of Jinnah. Jinnah who went through the pain of tuberculosis while reconstructing the map of the world, still couldn’t attract his daughter’s attention. Till Wadia’s are not interested in what Jinnah made with great hardship, rather they claim Jinnah house. Who should be the new owner of Jinnah house now? Dina, India or Pakistan, the answer is, Who did Jinnah love the most till his death? Of course the nation of five rivers, Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
