Technical Education and Public Services

The mere purpose of technical/professional education isn’t to accoutre us with the latest of technological trends and transform us into instruments of a set-up based on ideologies of material development. It also serves to develop intellect and inculcates a culture of sound reasoning and question based on progressive schemes to develop and flourish on individual and collective levels as well. It provides us with the fore-ground to play the techniques and get dirty with the tools of logic we learn to manipulate with in advance as we shift to Practical dominions. In doing so, technical education appears to be more awarding on large-scale.

Technical Education imparted in Engineering & Technology universities and colleges nationwide may be comprehensive in terms of the core technology definitions. Does the format of technical Education serve the very purpose of Formal Education? One reason that suffices as answer is that the technological education is there for the development of Human Civilization aimed at providing relief and ease to people in material terms. I assent to motivation behind the technological advancement but the yield of such an activity is interpretable in collective terms only with the aid of Graphs and Stats.

But where is the intimate and immediate effect on micro-level placed by us being technology students? One argumentative being stricken by the charisma of technology would argue that one should graduate first and then ponder over issues addressing Social and Public Welfare. The purpose of Education is to sharpen our personalities in a comprehensive sense. We can’t limit ourselves to our profession. We are the integral part of affected communal structures. One should be avid of a well-balanced education aimed to serve oneself in totality.

How is it possible to knit the relation between personal developments to Public Service? This is the motivation I want to advocate. Before ascribing the reason and logic behind such a relationship, I would like to detail several feasible Public-Services we as Engineering Students can execute.

Ours is a third-world country. Pakistan boasts a low literacy rate. Though it might seem wishful to augment the intellectual standard of masses and the literacy, the efforts in right direction can fructify. Ignorance is prevalent in common-masses. Ignorance has attributed to wretched social setup along with broken financial setup irrespective of the localities whether we address urban ones or rural. Masses aren’t aware of the civil and legal rights they possess. Human Rights Violations have raised skywards. At least we being gifted can extend the bounty and benediction to poor and the wretched. How? By launching public-awareness campaigns. We as students should formulate active organizations aimed to bring enlightenment to the doorstep of the affected and the afflicted. One humble approach can be to persuade our home-maids or other service persons to send their children to schools and assisting such subordinates in fiscal terms too. The least we can do is to make them aware of the civil and legal liberties they posses.

This was one such example in the context. Another activity in the regard can be comments and suggestions. We students should keep our eyes open on measures being adopted by the authorities to deal with miserable situations which masses find them in. The areas can be Healthcare, Transportation, Education and Social Welfare. Students can write in press and advise too. Students can come up with healthy projects aimed at providing relief to abject masses. How? One form is that we can analyze. The analysis techniques we learn in Statistics and associated sciences can be employed to some good. Being more precise, take the example of a new developmental scheme related to infrastructure in the locality. Being an engineering student one can comment on the merits as well as the de-merits of such a project by giving due consideration to the effects on the members of the beneficiaries on ground level. One can forward suggestions for improvement.

Rudimentary form of Public-Service can be a Blood-Donor Society. Taking this as a pattern we can amalgamate into factions characterised by some special kind of public service. The areas again can involve Education. In our leisure, we can teach the poor who knocks at our door for some household work. We can form charitable institutions aimed at receiving funds from the industry the clients on account for our technical services.

If we look around ourselves we can still find amongst us the sons and daughter of the poor as our class fellows. Through charity we can provide ample funds anonymously. We can form Book Banks and Libraries.

The relationship between Public Services and Personal Development can be developed with much ease. Personal Development in my view has roots in growth of ones insight into human nature. Being more insightful as above said enables one to acquire thorough understanding of human psychology, sentiments and the diversity in patterns defining a human personality. One can be more perceptive as far as human responses are concerned. This feature can enable one to work in complete concord with variety of persons. One can overcome personal feebleness and gain confidence in oneself and personal beliefs. One can be more interactive and improve Communication Skills and can strongly advocate and present ones point of view with practical know-how. Working as volunteer in Services Sector or NGOs is rewarding itself. One can acquaint oneself with different arenas of Logic and Rationale associated with Sciences involved therein. Each experience can be an educational experience. One can learn the mob psychology. One can learn the behavior and nature of Masses response as basic inspirations associated with the response are same. Moreover one can utilize such art in predicting response to technological advancement in correlation with commerce and economics. Field Study is beneficial as such and can be a rewarding factor at workplace.

The after effects of such a silent revolution can be ever-lasting as we can from a chain of progress and shape a challenging inspiration for future generations. We ourselves are the beneficiaries as we as a whole would develop as well as our well-rounded education will be ensured.
