On Wednesday night about 11:00 PM local time armed men carried out a series of ten coordinated attacks across the Mumabi, killing 101 people and injuring 287. Reports say four suspected terrorists have been killed and nine arrested.
A standoff is still going on at the Taj and Oberoi hotels where armed
men are believed to be holding hostages. Other locations attacked include a hospital, a train station, and a restaurant popular with tourists. Attackers used grenades and automatic weapons.
Reports say that previously unknown group calling themselves the Deccan Mujahideen has claimed responsibility.
The motive for the attacks is unclear, but in recent months India has witnessed a series of terrorist attacks. Last month 80 people died in a series of blasts in northeastern state Assam. Six weeks before that New Delhi was hit by a series of bombs in crowded market places killing 20 people.
These new attacks in Mumbai come as a severe blow to the current administration as several states in India are amidst elections.
World leaders across the globe including UK, USA, Russia, Pakistan, Australia, Japan have condemned the attacks and extended their support to the people and government of India.
This kind of terrorism is unforgivable and must be condemned unilaterally in no uncertain terms, in all forms, in all contexts.
