Constitutional Chess Game Nearing Climax

The exploding constitutional crisis in Pakistan is
reaching critical mass. The National Assembly
convened today: it is confirmed that PM Nawaz will
be putting forward legislation to curb the number
of judges and attempt to force The Chief Justice of
Supreme Court into retirement.


On the other hand, late today (Wed 10/29), The Chief
Justice suspended a controversial law supported by
the PM. This 'anti-defection law', critics say, stifles
discussions and violates constitutional right of
free speech. All opposition parties & lawyers nationwide
are supporting the Judiciary.


The Chief Justice has also ordered the government to explain
why it should not be held in contempt for challenging
the court. If the Supreme Court invokes Article 63(g) of
constitution, it is empowered to disqualify the prime
minister from being a member of the parliament.


A meeting between President Leghari, PM
Nawaz Sharif, CJ Sajjad Ali Shah and COAS Gen. Karamat to sort out the affair concluded a short while ago. Details of any possible resolution are not available yet.


It is interesting to note that Nawaz Sharif got into
a tussle with the President in his previous government,
and although reinstated by the Supreme Court, he resigned
along with the President at the request of the military.


This time around, Nawaz Sharif, once again finds himself
at odds with a pillar of power. Nawaz has over 4 years
remaining in his term. The Chief Justice is expected to retire in 4
months.
