Aqsa Pervez: The Casualty of Patriarchy

Dec 21, 2007

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is misreported in the media. Aqsa Parvez's murder did not happen in Canada. It surely did not happen in GTA and it did not happen in Mississauga. It happened in Little Texila,

A couple of months ago, a 17-years old Pakistani girl in Toronto called cops on her father for beating her severely - Reason? She refused to go to the Islamic School in Ajax which she had been attending for last 8 years. Later, the father apologized for his behavior and was let go at the daughter's request. Next morning, he kicked her out of the house. When I met her, she was looking for a shelter.

So why was Aqsa Pervez choked?

Well, why are other Aqsas being slapped, punched, kicked, abused, followed, spied on, coerced, threatened, blackmailed, kicked out and married away? Why? We all bear witness to such more common low-intensity domestic violence exclusively against our own female children. Heck, many of us do it and are proud of it. But do we really know why our children are changing their clothes in the restrooms of McDonalds and Burger Kings? A hint: It is NOT because these establishments have cleaner bathrooms.

Why did Victorian Christians have Chastity Belt for women? A locking item of clothing designed to prevent sexual intercourse and possibly masturbation.

At Athens airport in Greece, a woman's steel chastity belt had triggered a security alarm at the metal detector in 2003. The woman explained that her husband had forced her to wear the device to prevent an extramarital affair while she was on vacation in Greece. She was allowed to continue her flight to London on the pilot's authority.

In 2007, the Asian Human Rights Commission released a statement saying that women were being forced to wear chastity belts in the State of Rajasthan in India.

The last Magdalene Asylum was closed down in only 1996 in Ireland where 'fallen', vain and temptress women were sent by their parents and caretakers for chastity-training as they were too misfit to live in a decent and moral society. The Roman Catholic church believes that Mary Magdalene was Jesus disciple who gave her body to depraved and lustful for money but was later redeemed by Jesus Christ and repented from committing the mortal sin of vanity.

So who knows why the pretty Bernadette Harley, 16, was sent to Magdalene Asylum for being caught repeatedly flirting with the boys? Who knows why Rose Patricia was sent to the Asylum for bearing a child out of wedlock and why her child was taken away and put up for adoption? Who knows why Margaret was sent to Asylum for being raped by her own cousin?

We all do. It's not a secret.

Many designs for anti-masturbation devices were filed in the US Patent Office until the debunking of masturbation as a mental health problem in the early 1930s.

In a recent press conference, Canadian Imams denounced the murder as un-Islamic, but underscored the importance of a Hijab by saying that children who shunned it could make some parents feel like failures. They advised the parents to start the Hijab/Chastity-training of their daughters sooner.

They advised the parents to start the Hijab/Chastity-training sooner. Sooner, folks.

Maybe I am not smart enough to figure it out, but, I can't help asking if Aqsa's murder had nothing to do with her troubled chastity, why advise parents to start it sooner? Makes anyone with a double-digit IQ chuckle.

So why was Aqsa Parvez choked?

One Word: Patriarchy. Androcentric. Father Rule.

Almost all religions protect and promote Patriarchy.

Almost all states protect and promote Patriarchy.

Therefore, it's the most safe-guarded socio-economic system men have ever adopted. It was solely imposed due to millenia of human experience where male physical strength was the ultimate way for settling social conflicts, from war to disciplining women and children.

But what hurts Patriarchy? The night before Aqsa Parvez died, she, at someone else's house, danced to Indian music wearing a pink skirt she was not allowed to wear in her house and had to borrow it from one of her friends and her own matching pink top. This is the only thing that can really hurt Patriarchy: A free woman who is in charge of her life, her body and her mind - openly flaunting the authority of men (father, brother and husband) in her life. A vain woman is a real danger. Aqsa was. Not modest enough to appease our religious sensibilities even though she prayed five times a day.

The continuum of Patriarchy demands control and obeisance and heavily depends on keeping the women socially and sexually submissive to male power. It means a woman can not act free and bear children without the permission of religion, state and men, three tiers of authority and tyranny controlling her body and mind. This axis of evil makes sure that a woman must stay virgin till she has been given to her rightful owner (ie, husband) in order to avoid any paternal frauds; a mandatory requirement of Patriarchy. It's all about keeping the product intact, folks. A damaged good is no good. Who will marry her?

Religion roars on women that Patriarchy is Allah's wish. Holy Quran seals the vagina and acts as an ideological Chastity Belt.

States can not conceive Capitalism without Patriarchy which provides a way to keep the gained capital inside the unit of family.

Men are raised to enjoy domination and Patriarchy ensures our authority and power stay intact. Shame and honour are simply the social safety-valves to keep this sexual order in the house which is a dire requirement of Patriarchy. That's why fathers, brothers and husbands almost always act as STEVEN SEGALS OF VAGINAS in the family.

Pakistani women accept this grotesque display of male chauvinism and authority because they have virtually no other options on the table.

If Muslim apologists still can't see this axis of evil, then they will probably never see it.
