Scattered Wide
Jawahara Saidullah

Scattered Wide will focus on all aspects of theDiaspora of the subcontinent. We are scattered across the globe, in every continent and almost every country.
From Nobel prize winners to laborers and taxi drivers, the people of the Diaspora are misunderstood and are often seen as a monolithic group.
This column will delve into the complex realities of being a member of this group. We are ultimately individuals
with a distinct identity even if we are scattered wide across the world.
Jawahara Saidullah has been on chowk since 1999 during which time she wrote fiction and some non-fiction pieces and was a featured writer for a few years. She was a weekly columnist, writing about Indian issues abroad, for Mid-Day newspaper in Mumbai. Her first
novel, The Burden of Foreknowledge, is forthcoming in March/April 2006 from Roli Books. Her fiction and essays have been published in anthologies, journals
and magazines.
