UNICEF Picture of the Year 2007

Posted: Dec 18, 2007 Tue 04:01 pm     Views: 839    Interacts: 2

Published in Metro (London) on 17/12/2007. The caption is:

The image hardly fits our idea of the happy couple's wedding picture - but this haunting photograph taken in Afghanistan graphically captures life for millions of girls given in marriage while under age.

N.B: Underage marriages do occur in some parts of northern India. However it's fading out.

That's why woman (gaal) is treated as a commodity in some parts of the world & India is hardly an exception. :(

In Pashtun society in Afghanistan as in many parts of NWFP this man must have paid a heavy sum to the girls father to get married.Sometimes a man spends half his life in earning this sum of money called bride price. If he dies the girl will have to marry his brother or stay a widow in the family. The leftist Khalqis after the Saur Inqilab of 1978 had banned this practice of bride money and had fixed something around 150 Afghani as bride price. This was exploited by mullahs and landlords to preach jihad against them !
