Two women accused of being witches killed in Nepal

Kathmandu, December 25

A man believing an evil spell was cast on him, hacked to death two elderly women he accused of being witches in a Nepalese village, a news report said on Thursday.

The man had been sick for several days and believed two women in his neighbourhood were responsible for his illness, the Kantipur newspaper reported.

The two victims, aged 70 and 60, succumbed to their wounds. Police in Karmaiya village, about 160 kilometers (100 miles) south of the capital Kathmandu, have taken the man into custody. Most people in Nepal’s impoverished villages have little access to doctors and modern medicine, and often turn to traditional medicine and beliefs when they are sic
