Listening Comprehension

It is sooo complicated. Listening, that is.

I know. You’re going..."Chilli ka Dimaagh kharab hai,
bhala suNNa bhee koi mushkil kaam hai ?. Kaan kis
kaam kai liyea haiN akhir ?". Bhi, it’s not the kaan
wala suNNa. It’s the heart wala suNNa.

Take for example, your friend A*. You are good friends
and then one day he acts peculiar, says something so
out of character, that you are taken-aback. You are
thrown for a loop . You feel betrayed . At that point,
how you react defines how good of a listner you really
are.

Do you lash out ? , do you reprimand ?, do you put
him/her on probabtion ?, do you hold it in and then
later, uss kee miTTi paleeD karTay haiN ?. ~
OR
Do you hear with your heart: Do you use your eyes and
see that s/he came late, looked flustered, irritable,
withdrawn ?. Do you use your ears and hear him being
short with others, awaaz meiN wou TaraNNum, wou bay-
saakhTagi are missing aaj ?. Online, it is even more
of a challange. You’ve got only one sense to work with.

One wrong move can start a cycle: S/he says something,
you misinterpret the situation and say something stupid.
Now it’s their turn to feel betrayed and they slam you
back --and this way it goes back ’n forth like a see-
saw, until the wheels come off the wagon.

Qualities of a good listner IMO are:-
Sensitivity, patience, humility, kindness and experience.

Yea sub cheezaiN jub jama ho jaieN, Tou Tub ja kar aik
acha listner banTa hai. No wonder they are in such short
supply. Khair, you live and you learn.


(*) I learned later, that this one friend had a bad
tooth and was undergoing root-canalling for it that
wasn’t going well. He wanted to be a big-boy and was
keeping it from everybody. Ab kallo jo kanna hai.
