scholar for peace program at WISCOMP

this is the text of the program brochure:

----------------------
SCHOLAR OF PEACE FELLOWSHIPS-2005

WISCOMP (Women in Security, Conflict Management and Peace) is a South Asian research and training initiative, which facilitates the leadership of women in the areas of peace, security and international affairs. It positions its work at the confluence of peacebuilding, conflict transformation and security studies. The intersection of these with gender concerns provides the focus of its programmes.

Proposals are invited for the WISCOMP Scholar of Peace Fellowships awarded for academic research, media and special projects. The fellowships are designed to encourage innovative, multi-disciplinary, theoretical engagement and research on issues that emerge at the intersection of the discourses on gender, security and conflict transformation.

These include areas such as human security, conflict resolution, multi-track peace initiatives, gender and peacebuilding, terrorism, regional cooperation, human rights, diversity and coexistence, governance et al. The focus is on projects that explore the interface between gender and these issues, within the terrain of peacebuilding and non-traditional formulations of security.

The Fellowships seek to encourage more women and men to work in these crucial areas, and to focus attention on how gender perspectives may inform the discourse. The studies undertaken are expected to provide comprehensive information on hitherto ignored issues that pertain to conflict and security, and that offer holistic options for nonviolent transformation in regions of protracted conflict.

THE SCHOLAR OF PEACE Fellowships are awarded under three distinct categories:

· Fellowships for Academic Research are expected to lead to the production of a publishable monograph by the end of the grant period. While fellowships are available to scholars at any stage of their careers, post-graduate research or a doctoral degree are a prerequisite for proposals under this category. (Those in the midst of an MPhil or PhD programme are encouraged to apply only after the submission of their thesis).

· The Media Fellowships are designed to support young and mid-career journalists seeking to focus on in-depth stories. Media Fellows are required to publish a stipulated number of articles in established publications.

· The Special Projects seek to identify and support talent that explores innovative approaches and uses alternative and creative media such as film art, theatre, dance and installations. Fellowships under this category encourage NGO workers, activists, grassroots practitioners, artists, policymakers and full-time professionals to bring their learning and expertise to a wider audience.

Eligibility
The Fellowship Programme is ordinarily open to South Asians under the age of 45. Applicants may come from a variety of professional backgrounds including academia, social movements, gender studies, peace building, diplomacy, human rights, defense, law, business, media and the arts. Women are, especially, encouraged to apply.

To Apply
Candidates should send a two-page CV, the names of two referees and a completed application form. The forms are available at the WISCOMP office and can also be downloaded from our website. Short listed candidates will be invited to submit a detailed proposal. An expert committee, through a multi-step process that could include an interview, will select the fellows.

WISCOMP believes that the work of its fellows should have an impact on policy, discourse and practice. It should ideally form part of an alternative, replicable, original body of work, which can be disseminated and shared both within the South Asian region and internationally. The emphasis will be on the potential of the work to impact and catalyze change in arenas of violence and tension.

Terms
The Scholar of Peace Fellowships are awarded once a year, for a period ranging from three months to a year. The one-year fellowships carry a grant of up to Indian Rs. 2,00,000. Short-term grants will be commensurate with the duration and objectives of the project.

While applications will be accepted throughout the year, only those proposals received by September 15, 2004 will be considered for grants for the forthcoming year.

Women in Security, Conflict Management and Peace is an initiative of the Foundation for Universal Responsibility of His Holiness The Dalai Lama.
