ramzan

Last night somewhere between the frantic calls from h and s, i realized. we’ve become adults. "Are you fasting tommorow?" "chaand dikha?" and similar queries were put forth , phonecalling back and forth..and it hit me. this was what mum and dad worried about - we just got excited in anticipation of that sighting of the moon (which interestingly has its many issues) and prepared to fast, looking forward to the elaborate iftari that would undoubtedly await us the next day.
There is something in the air in Karachi when Ramzan descends...someone once called it "magic"... getting up in the middle of the night, trying to be as silent as possible so B wouldnt be disturbed, waking everyone up once the eggs and salan were ready, going out to buy nests of "firni" with dad on that first night, driving down to the bazar for pakoras a half hour before maghrib, those last few minutes before iftari time that went by so slowly that we busied ourselves in imagining what we would eat and in what sequence it would be eaten...here’s hoping this ramzan will be as peaceful as the ones i reminisce about ..
