WHITE


I am White, I am Light, I am the Lightest

I am the fresh white of fat clouds like giant butter pats

I am the Blue-white of a baby’s eyes, unclouded by life

I am the fragrant, pale-yellow white of champa flowers

I am the luxurious, sensuous white of sun-dried linen


At times, I am the white of a white-washed terrace

and at others, the brilliant white of stars,

under which a million secrets are bared


I am the mint-white of teeth, bared in a delighted smile

I am the jubilant white breast of the blue Kingfisher

as it catches a silvery-white fish


I am the reluctant white on the tainted bodies of politicians

At times the tired white of a Granny’s hair

and at others, the eternal white of snow-covered peaks


Sometimes I am the innocent white of a young girls’ first bra.

Or the timid soft white fur of red-eyed rabbit.


I am the beginning, I am life

I am White.
