the Chaqchan mosque in Khaplu has the kalma written in what looks like chalk or whitewash on its wooden lintel, only it had Ali wali-ullah tagged on at the end. I was surprised, a bit curious... a mental "aah, so they’re probably shia or agha khani there"... why didn’t it make me angry the way it would have in 94 or thereabouts. I mean what right did anyone have changing the sacred formula?
One reason could be that I no longer own "Islam", that I no longer feel that I’m responsible for it - it’s almost as if I were outside it, looking on at an interesting phenomenon.
And yet empty churches converted into monuments make me sad.
