Boring newspapers in South Asia

Posted: Dec 21, 2004 Tue 09:27 am     Views: 136

I’ve always been amazed at the poor quality of newspapers in both Pakistan and India. Considering that they are one of the chief mediums of dissemination of information in both countries, their utter inability to provide any information of real value is amazing. I bet if 99% of these newspapers disappear tomorrow, nobody would really be bothered.
I think the major reason is the inability of these newspapers to attract any real talent to work and write for them. They mostly employ either those who couldn’t really hack it in more lucrative professions or those who do it for lack of any other avenues to keep themselves suitably busy. What else explains Veeresh? The owners don’t care because they are not willing to pay up to get stories of any real merit. Those who work there don’t want to work harder and intrude on their laid back lifestyles.
Most journalists write about other journalists and how brilliant they are. Kind of like Letterman and Leno, knowing fully well that they need the celebrities as much as they need them and in due course of time, they’ll be applauded for their "services" also.
Notwithstanding lack of talent, newspapers are becoming largely irrelevant in the west also. Mainly due to more sources of information like blogs and the internet. In South Asia, this process will become more accelarated due to cable and satellite penetration. The relatively few talented journalists will migrate to these media in increasing numbers.
