A universal fact

Posted: Jan 30, 2005 Sun 11:55 pm     Views: 82

Well, about mothers, at least i think it is universal. I have slowly begun to realize that our parents think no end of us, however the point i am trying to make is that Mother is vociferous about it. Why i use the world *slowly* is because, it wasn’t so in my childhood, for all of us i mean - Then other aunts would brag about their children, but not Mother. But then as we grew up, things changed. Now she prides in telling her friends about us, she will tell her various relatives (whose eyes would of course be popping out as per her version) that my daughter in India earns as much as your son/daughter does in the US/UK/etc; and you can see this son being his boss’s favorite etc etc. The list is endless.

There are some tidbits i share with her and lo and behold my relatives know it before i even take forty winks. I was supposed to go to Canada for about a year, of course i tell her and then whether my plans of going there materialize or not, the dreams of my Mother and her relatives - they definitely build castles. I casually ask her, Mother hope you have not told X, Y and Z that i am going abroad, you know how things are here, one day it is east and the other day west et cetera and Mother says a strong No (which is to be read as why will i keep telling others about you) then after a bit of coaxing she will tell i told only your Naniji and be sure she will not tell a single soul(you know how hurt she feels if we don’t tell her such things) or your Bua (you know how she brags about her daughter) or Mrs. K(who knows more stories of my wedding sarees than i will ever know).

Neway, the other day i call my Mausaji about furniture and how expensive is fair enough and then he says Hey when are you leaving to Canada. Sigh...(Of course, my trip stands cancelled) I tell him, i am not going and then it all tumbles out... Sigh... In my next conversation with my dear darling sweet Mother, i ask her again, Mother are you sure you did not tell anyone about my supposed trip. Then she gives me all lame ones :-) like i don’t remember what i have told and to whom i have told, and then i tell her that Mausa-Mausiji know about it. Ab humari Matashri kehtee hien, i told Naniji you might go; i dint tell her you will definitely be going - some such lamer thing

Meri Maa, chup raho nah
