Equipoise as a synonym for partition would be a unique usage of English. Or else 12 year old kids were smarter in the past than current adults.
The following is from Volume III of "Speeches, Statements & Messages of the Quaid-e-Azam", editor Khurshid Ahmad Khan Yusufi, and is a report from Dawn, October 19, 1945 of a speech Jinnah made to the Baluchistan Muslim Students Federation.
"They (the Congress) say, they do not understand Pakistan....On the contrary, I find that even a child of 12 or 13 understands it. When I see Muslim boys shouting for Pakistan, I very often enquire from them as to what Pakistan is, and believe me, I am not exaggerating, they give me perfect answers."
"Mr. Jinnah then related that he met a boy of 12 at Karachi and described how he answered to the various questions and added: "Even Muslim children understand it, but here is this great leader, a great internationalist, who says he does not understand Pakistan! Pakistan means partition, Pakistan means division, it means you must take Hindu provinces of yours and leave out Muslim provincies where we want to establish our own Government......
