Uncle, Auntie & Munna At Desi Mujras

Posted: Aug 29, 2005 Mon 07:23 pm     Views: 81

This thing has been bothering me for some time now and I just
can’t take it anymore. I was watching the Pakistan Day celeb-
rations in New York yesterday and after the usual harangue by
the local politico-blowhards, complimented by a punjabi dhool
master, the pop bands kicked-off: Jal, Annie, Hadiqa Kiyani, etc.

But as usual, something was not right.

On the stage, behind the performing band, was a row of stern
looking, bald-headed, extremely ill-at-ease septuagenarians.
They didn’t seem to know why they were there, and what they
were supposed to be doing, while the younger generation cut
loose with abandon. You would think that these elders would
have the sense to melt-away, once the halla-gulla started and
allow the kids to have some fun. But no, they refused to budge.

They kept sitting there, looking as comfortable as a nun at an
orgy.

When the singer Annie, thrusting and grinding her hips (like she
was expecting tips later), raised her hand and pointed to nobody
in particular and called out "menu teray naal piyaar ho gaya!...",
one of the old fogeys actually craned his neck around to look
in the direction where she had pointed, to see who it was!...

Apart from the stage, we had the whole front section reserved
for the most conservative Pakistani families and their little ones,
who all stared catatonically at the stage, as if in a trance. This
phenomenon is quite common at Pak fashion catwalks. Sultry
models in flimsy attire will be sashaying to the beat of techno
music, while infants are running around the stage, intermittantly
looking up in bewilderment at the antics of the models, while
their parents are dressed up and behave as if they came to a
chehlum.

At a Levis sponsored fashion show, when models clad in skin-
tight 501 jeans would reach the end of the ramp, they would rotate
their hips and perform a sensual lap dance in the air, slowly sinking
on their haunches, which ofcourse involved splaying of their legs in
a provocative manner. Each time, the poor uncle sitting in front
with his wife and kids, would instinctively look away in shame.

Why do these people keep coming to such gatherings, and who
keeps on inviting them and why ?. OH’ GAWD, WHY ?.

What is the business of purdah observing, aged uncles and aunties
to come and sit there (and yawn) at fashion shows and rock concerts ?.
Shouldn’t such affairs be reserved for Fashionistas, the bad boys of
cricket and other such outlaws of society ?. Not the uncles who voted
for the JUI.

And if they are curious, why can’t they stay at home and watch it on
TV ?. Who put a gun to their head and dragged them there ?. Chalo
OK. Fine. So somebody hooked you up with some tickets to such a
chic affair as a favor, atleast dress appropriately and please...please,
leave your little kids at home!.
