A surreal manifestation of existential crisis is our search for a cause. The prospect of moving unremarkably from cradle to pyre is not only unappealing, it is depressing. It is highly likely that the quest for identification with a grand purpose will remain unfulfilled. The odds of contributing worthily to the identified cause are grimmer. Most of us will die woefully aware that we failed to make a mark. In addition to genetic marks, our legacy would consist of the valuables, property and other assets for which we toiled throughout our lives.

It is difficult not to feel queasy when this realization dawns on you. The only reassuring thought is that one is in a position to ponder about such questions. For many unfortunate souls, the effort to earn their bread will exhaust all their possibilities. Only when there is food on the plate and wine in the glass do people get ideas!
