I couldn’t sleep and when I can’t sleep, I like to walk. In Houston it sometimes means you walk in the rain even when it wasn’t raining 5 minutes ago. Mind far away, one foot in front of the other, until I wandered far from home. It was my shivering that finally got my attention. Scanning the unfamiliar streets around me made even more foreign by the dark and wet, I saw a flicker of light from a window across the street. Welcoming, because it happened to be in the house of a friend. I felt a bit foolish. I wasn’t seeking conversation, but shelter, but I decided not to knock...

I went to the nearby park. It wasn’t too late in the night. There were was a couple sitting nearby on a bench. I sit... guilty by racial and ethnic implication, nestled securely in my sheltered bench spot, observing and eavesdropping on these seemingly pivotal conversations between those more and less advantaged, tiresome tirades of primary importance only to those in a position to demonstrate and remonstrate…which occurs in these conversations with alarming frequency. They speak in broken english, riddled with lyrical errors.
