’tis been a week since I went to see this film with friends, and it is still on my mind. I have never seen a Darren Aronofsky film before, and so didn’t know what or what not to expect. A classmate had mentioned how the film was Borgesian (shades of Jose Luis Borges) and if you think of myth, and mythmaking in Borges and the abrupt shifts in his stories, then yes, this might be that. With all the time shifts, and the various images that flash before your eyes, what The Fountain can safely be said to be, is a love story. A man, in various periods of time, trying to save the woman he loves.
Death is a disease, the doctor says. Hugh Jackman’s character wishes to prolong his wife’s life. Rachel Weisz is wonderful in this, but then I would be happy watching Rachel Weisz in any film, piss-poor as it was. It does get frustrating, the doctor’s behavior, and I don’t want to throw out spoilers here, so I’ll stop, but I walked out of that movie thinking "what the ’ell?" My friend, the atheist liked it because of the various philosophies. I was irritated by the attitude towards death. Death is not a disease, death is part of life, the end part perhaps, but there is disease, and then there is death.
Am anticipating The Namesake
