From across the border
Sir: You have rightly observed that India has not been able to give due protection to its Muslims as evidenced by recent revelations about Gujarat and Mumbai. However, you should have been honest enough to also point out that despite its record of riots, Gujarat has more Muslims than there are Hindus in the whole of Pakistan. Moreover, your argument would sound more sincere about Indian Muslims’ security if you had also pointed out that the Pakistani state has been waging a declared war of Islam against Indians for the last 20 years. In the absence of these admissions, Pakistan lacks the moral right to opine on the state of Indian Muslims.
SADHANA GUPTA
Ed’s note: Since Ms Gupta has conceded the basic point contained in the editorial, it is sufficient to say that this newspaper has always editorialised about Pakistan’s poor treatment of its minorities and advocated normalisation of relations with India to the mutual benefit of both sides. However, Pakistan has not fought against Hindu India but India in a state-to-state contest. By giving it a religious colour, Ms Gupta has fallen prey to the same narrative that keeps hard-liners on both sides in business.
