Entangled in different kinds of nationalism

Posted: Mar 18, 2008 Tue 06:56 pm     Views: 125    Interacts: 1

Nationalism is too broad a term for me to talk about. It depends on what kind it is. There are all kinds of people with different perception of the same thing. For me it is the 'secular nationalism' that is the most important as well the only kind of nationalism that I can understand, but there are other kinds too:

Secular nationalism
cultural nationalism
Feminist nationalism
Religious nationalism

and the list goes on.....

Everybody defines it in a different way. My kind wishes to see Pakistan a secular state, cultural nationalists may want to hug left right left after Eid namaz or have a 10 day pre dholki-actual dholki-mehndi-shadi-walima-dinners wedding. I consider feminist nationalism to be a subset of secular one. You cannot have a 100% secular state unless you take into account what 50% of it's population thinks. I cannot comprehend the last one as I don't know how you can put the two together at the first place.

There was a time when Hasina Moin wrote beautiful scripts for PTV. That is the time that I wish returns to Pakistan. It was a time of peace and a little progress too (at least in terms of how people thought). It was a different Lahore. It was the time when I prefered 'choco bar' to 'cornetto', loved frost, and hated wearing a dupatta that even my qaari sahab did not mind that. I know i am off the subject but that's how the brian works. It jumps. In short, I hope that not just Pakistan but the world can become a secular place where everybody can be happy and love their God in whatever way they want.

Just a last bit for those who remember Dhoop Kinare and Faiz's quartain sung by Tina Sani in it.
