http://www.hindu.com/2008/04/02/stories/2008040257820100.htm

Police are on the look-out for four other persons

The accused are said to be members of Ram Sena

Belgaum: The Gokak Police arrested three persons on Monday and are on the look-out for four of their accomplices in connection with serial killings and other offences committed in Gokak town and adjoining areas of Maharashtra during the last two years.

The accused have been identified as Vikas Tippanna Salunke, Manjunath Gopal Sutar and Uday Kallappa Chigadolli. All of them are 20 years old and residents of Gokak town. The four persons who are absconding are Kedari Basavaneppa Jadhav, Anand Ramappa Holegar, Babu Ramachandra Nakathi and Balachandra Balappa Banavi. They are also from Gokak town and are between 20 and 25 years.

Superintendent of Police Hemant Nimbalkar said on Tuesday that the police had ascertained that the absconding persons were members of Ram Sena.

He said that the accused were involved in the murder of a 19-year-old youth Riyaz Ahmed Hudli on October 23, 2006. They allegedly strangled him using a metallic wire and cut off his genitals after finding out that he had a love affair with a Hindu girl studying in his college. They also beat Shabbir Kuratti to death using wooden clubs and stones on January 6, 2008 because Kuratti had demanded that Jadhav return Rs. 500 which he had borrowed. Both offences were committed in Gokak town, he said.

On September 9, 2007, they allegedly strangled a 16-year-old youth, Kumar Karan, son of Laxman Subhanji, near Yamkanmardi, which comes under Yamkanmardi Police Station limits, in a fit of anger. Subhanji had been repeatedly warning his son against moving about with Ram Sena activists, he added.

During interrogation, the accused are said to have confessed to having murdered a driver of a multi-utility vehicle and later throwing his body in the forests at Amboli Ghat, about 60 km from Belgaum city. They had hired the jeep in Gadahinglaj near Sankeshwar town. The accused are also said to have confessed to killing a middle-aged man in a sugarcane field after they learnt that the deceased had sold a cow for Rs.15,000 in a weekly shandy at Mudalgi village. After killing him, the accused threw away the money in the field. The police are investigating these two cases.

The accused also admitted to breaking into the house of a doctor in Gokak town on January 18, 2008 and stealing Rs. 6.10 lakh in cash and 300 gm of gold ornaments. They also set ablaze the municipal shopping complex in the town on the same day, at midnight. Forty-one shops were gutted and properties worth Rs.1.38 crore were destroyed. That apart, the accused also set on fire two motorbikes in Gokak town on August 1, 2007 and February 16, 2008, police said.
