Action over words - the beach mess

Posted: Apr 21, 2008 Mon 04:33 am     Views: 183    Interacts: 5

This past weekend the Social Project (www.socialproject.pk) enacted its first program in public mobilization. We had over 400 people who took part in the beach clean up (at Sea View in Karachi) and filled over 600 large trash bags with harmful litter. I was amazed to see how widespread the participation was...we had members from over a dozen Rotary clubs, an organization called SOS, the Art of Living, the Pakistan Navy and of course, the public at large. We noticed foreigners who happened to be at the beaches who were collecting litter with their families. Even the monkey, horse, and camel walas started pitching in when they saw so many people saying, "this is our city...we should at least fill one bag".

We under-estimated how much garbage there was...despite so many people collecting so much....we still couldn't complete the task.

However, a point was made; that the initiative of a few core group of organizers can have an exponential affect if done properly. This was an experiment in public mobilization that has proven to be a success. This is the theme of the Social Project.

So what is needed so that any small group of core organizers should be able to carry out exercises in positive mobilization of the public? For one...a common point where they can meet, share ideas and schedule events. Secondly, access to resources such as sponsors, materials and logistics support (garbage trucks). The Social Project is a new initiative and needs the support of people who can come forth to help us put this thing together...but it is on the way. The site is up and we are working on adding functionality so that you can use a forum, a shared calender and other important functions necessary for the purpose. Also, we have had a chance to meet with various sponsors over this last event so we will be bringing you resources that any of you can use for events that you schedule. The Clifton Cantonment Board has committed to provide garbage trucks whenever there is such an event, small or large.

So now...the question that arises is this; who will take the step forward and take some action? We need people to help....and you don't need to make any long term commitments....just do what you can. Give us a shout if you think you would like to make a difference to your surroundings...email us at icare@socialproject.pk

There are only a handful of principle organizers at TSP....everyone is welcome to join...we need the help. Please contact us if you want to implement your ideas and put them into action.

Best regards,

TSP

Suggestion:
Not kidding and mean seriously, it is recommended that the principal organizers of this well meant event write to the heads of each and every political organization asking that when they schedule their next wheel jam strike, have their audiences meet up for another clean up day, call it a protest against the deteriorating conditions of the water bodies.
Similarly the protesters can also go on a campaign to clean up the city in each development and neighborhood while the city govt should assist by providing garbage collection trucks.
Ask the leadership to participate in person so their followers would also pitch in.

I just wanted to say BIG THANKS for all the hard work and initiatives you guys have taken at TSP.. We all talk of words but it is the action that will clearly take us into the world of peace and comfort.
I am based in London and any help or of any use I can be, I shall.
I have already socialized this concept of social project amongst my friends, near and far.
I wish you guys all the best and true appreciation for bringing Karachi beach back to some of its glory….

With best wishes,
