It means that though friends use you in times of need, they will qickly let go of you the minute they are stable on their own feet - they dont mind being your extra baggage, but they will not for a second pick up your weight if they have a choice!

Upon seeing a slight warmth
Thats what I wrote in one of Rehman Baba's translations where the metaphors are in contrast with Mohsin Naqvi's but thought is the same. Waisay I like this one from Mohsin Naqvi the most,
Mohsin taloo-e-ashk daleel-e-sahar tau hay
shab kat gayee charagh bujha dena chahiye
