The Fruit Hunters: a must view/read and eventually taste...wild/crazy/exotic/intoxicating world of fruits

Posted: Jul 9, 2008 Wed 12:18 pm     Views: 815    Interacts: 3

So I was listening to my favorite radio station on the drive in to work: KPFK kpfk.oprg (pacifica network; run on donations from the public and not on corporate sponsorship)...and Amy Goodman's Democracy Now democracynow.org was on.

The last 10 minutes were dedicated to Adam Leith, author of the book The Fruit Hunters: A Story of Nature, Adventure, Commerce, and Obsession.

In the interview he talks about the many wars that have taken place over fruit...how fruit was used to show victors (e.g. This fig was plucked fresh from XYZ land that we have conquered)...and how fruit is used in negotiations: India's nuclear deal where india must buy american nuclear technology had the indians requiring that america allows indian mangoes into america. The nuclear deal hit the stalemate until bush visited india and said "Americans are looking forward to eating Indian mangoes". Presto...nuclear deal is a done deal.

He also gave Amy Goodman a "miracle berry" to eat...after which Amy was given a lime to eat...she was amazed that the lime tasted sweeter than a sweet orange. The miracle berry turns sour into extremely sweet...

Who knew that you could bounce the smelly durian like a beach volleyball ?

This book seems to be chockful of fascinating fruits, and the human obsessions about them.

I'm gonna read it in the near future...but won't be reviewing it...as I've already given you a preview!

do check out the author's wonderful pictoral story at the following site thefruithunters.com
Here's a video that shows some of the exotic fruits that most of us don't even know about...

MAJ (pbuy),

I couldn't post other pics of the lady fruit as they were too riske ;)

Humsab buzurg ji,

I am busy with other things these days...happy to get time away from the daily negatitvity of unplugged...as my sufi ancestors would say: let the sleeping people sleep, let the awake be awake, it is the restless that you want to talk to. The UP crowd has mostly sleeping folks...best to let them sleep :)

Lady fruit seems to be very aptly named.

Have you taken 'Sanyas' following the footsteps of your ancestors of pre-conversion era? Why you and your twin brother Salim are missing at the same time?
