Notwithstanding the fact that availability of good and attractive textbooks is important for the good performance of students;that the latter have reached prematric/matric class with good or poor quality textbooks is of significance itself. For by this time it is clear whether the pupil is inclined to the pre-medical or pre-engineering group.
At this juncture it is important to state that numerous medical schools ought to be formed in both the urban and the small towns in the rest of the countryside. In Pakistan these medical schools would teach the Intermediate level science pre-medical group. It is foreseeable that the course will be exactly the same as the regular interscience pre-medical group, but with some very specific differences. The biology group will include theory/practicals teaching of human anatomy/physiology/biochemistry and histology.Vivisection on human cadavers will be performed by competent teachers and they will be allotted groups of students.Comparitive anatomy and psychology must be taught. So also phyla Hierarchy with emphasis on carbon dating,d na samples in fossils, phenomena of mutation, adaptation, selection and survival of various species must be taught with luxury of detail which is found wanting in the interscience course presently.Museum specimens, modules, dissection books and online anatomy lessons will augment the course.
So here, physics, chemistry and biology will have the same laws and definitions and principles, as the regular interscience course but the examples and calculations will pertain to the different LABS, diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, and machines which use the scientific properties and applications. The table of elements is a must, and its use is prevalent in isotopic Medicine.Same for biology;nowadays biomedical Research is hot topic and its importance cannot be stressed more.Anti-biosis is a field needing lots of alert and watch and is purely bio/bio.That leaves chemistry, same for chemistry. It is replete with examples and equations of biochemistry and pharmacology, which the students will find very interesting.
Such medical schools should take as first priority those Matric students who are excellent in biology. Also there should be so many medical schools that the closest regular interscience institutions could be affiliated to them and would send their students for human biology studies.
If the average or good average students are all accommodated too and encouraged to join the medical schools instead of the regular interscience colleges;it will not be to their disadvantage even if they do not make it to a medical college eventually.Medical schools would prepare them for other biomedical fields which have a big scope nowadays.
A good basis in the preclinical subjects is provided by medical schools to those students who are admitted to medical college- this indeed could help cut down the study time and maybe anatomy and physiology will be finished in year one MBBS, to concentrate on pharmacology and Pathology in year two MBBS.Here I would like to suggest-if medical schools also include in their course Community health and hygiene;and elementary psychology(intermediate level) with normal vs pathological clinical signs/symptoms and behavior, this would be a value added teaching experience put to test. Thus benefitted, the entrant to the medical College/university will be better poised to give full attention to the clinical scenario, from the very beginning of clinical year three MBBS professional course;and again lots of study time will be saved.
After the medical school interscience course is over and this time is reserved for hands- on- training in various LABS and medical departments using technics involving the freshly learnt applied knowledge of physics chemistry and biology, the students would get a certificate. The interim period of vacations plus in some cases a long wait for the results would be well utilised in doing actual jobs in hospitals requiring certified technical know how. This would indeed be a blessing for those students who come from a low income family background.
