In the recent past, a spate of works have appeared on the Pakistani military and its role with Pakistan. To the best of my knowledge, no one has actually bothered to ask what is the role and function of a military? Why are the armies created and what function do they serve?
This may seem like a very childish question, but has it been answered in Pakistan? Pakistani army still claims that it is the defender of Pakistan's ideology and frontiers. Defending an ideology is like suggesting that a ring can plug hole. If armies are created, as we are told, to defend then why most wars that are started of pre-emptive nature?
Wars and politics and the state and their nature to one another have to be revisted because some where, we lost the reason why wars are fought as we have made wars an end unto themselves instead of being a means to an end.
