26/11 trial: Cyber expert traces Pak link

Pawar, deposing as a key witness in the 26/11 trial, told special judge M L Tahaliyani that an e-mail address created by a person -- who opened the internet telephone service account -- was accessed by terrorists from 10 internet protocol (IP) addresses (five from Pakistan, two from the US, two from Russia and one from Kuwait).

The Mumbai Police and special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam have said that the entire "horrifyingly chilling'' terror conspiracy was hatched in Pakistan and executed with the help of modern gadgets, including global positioning system devices, satellite phones and voice-over internet protocol (VoIP) to ensure that the 10 gunmen were in constant touch with their handlers back home.

Pawar said an e-mail account in the name of `Kharak Singh' was used by a wanted accused to communicate with the terrorists, including Ajmal Kasab. E-mails from and to kharak_telco@yahoo.com were traced to Col R Sadatullah of the Special Communcation Organisation, Qasim Road, Rawalpindi, in Pakistan. Three addresses were found to be World Call Network operations and the fifth was from Sajid Iftikar, EFU House, Jail Road, Pakistan, Pawar said.

The witness said that the other IP addresses were all proxy and were traced to FDC servers.net (Chicago), Ahemed Mekky (Kuwait) and Vladimir Zernov, Joint Stock Company (Moscow). The link to Col Sadatullah is significant for the prosecution as the police have claimed that he belonged to the Pakistani Army.

Last week FBI agents and Callphonex owner said the phone payment and the GPS map originated from Pakistan. The investigating officer in the 26/11 terror case, Ramesh Mahale, had called Pawar and asked him to investigate the 10 IP addresses provided by the FBI in February 2009. It was the geographical locations of these IP addresses that the police wanted and Pawar spent hours in front of computers to get close to the physical locations. Kasab's lawyer, Abbas Kazmi, will now cross-examine the police inspector.
