The Difference Between Literacy and Education

Posted: Sep 8, 2009 Tue 09:27 pm     Views: 246    Interacts: 1

The Pakistani education system produces many individuals who claim to be educated, but are in reality no more than literatre. There are two words in Urdu, unparh (illiterate) and jaahil (uneducated) - it is possible to be one without the other.

For example, it is a well-lknown fact that the Prophet (Peace be Upon Him) - was "ummi" (Arabic for unparh/illiterate). However, he was the most educated person in thw world despite this. Why? See below.

The other way round, I believe you can be uneducated even if you are literate, in other words you can be jahil even though you are parha likha. Literacy is to do with reading and writing and basic maths. Education is to do with THINKING and AWARENESS. And Thinking and Awareness are what Islam is all about.

In all honesty, I do look down on people who I deem to be literate, but without having reached the awareness level to call themselves educated. Probably makes me a snob...Guess what? Me likes being one:):):)
