STOCKHOLM:Indian American Venkatraman Ramakrishnan and Thomas Steitz and Israeli Ada Yonath won the 2009 Nobel Prize in chemistry on Wednesday for mapping ribosomes, the protein-producing factories within cells, at the atomic level.

India-born Venkatraman Ramakrishnan is a senior scientist at the MRC Laborartory of Molecular Biology at Cambridge.

Born in 1952 in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu, Ramakrishnan shares the Nobel prize with Thomas E Steitz (US) and Ada E Yonath (Israel) for their "studies of the structure and function of the ribosome".

Ramakrishnan earned his B.Sc. in Physics (1971) from Baroda University and his Ph.D. in Physics (1976) from Ohio University.

Hey Ambi.... I know you cannot let go of the hate even though you try to put on a facade of appearing reasonable.... but......
OP has NOT said india wins.... he said Indian origin guy wins.....

I can repeat it if you have trouble understanding.....

By the way ... he did his education in india and then pursued research in US... ....

Let me know if you want me to slow down ... I am there to help ..

Look my intention was not to offend anyone. Knowledge should be respected - and I appreciate this guy's hard work.

The mis-spellling of the name was ofcourse unintentional - I am surprised you would think for a moment it was intentional!

At the end of the day - if a pakistani person wins a Nobel prize for studies/work facilitated and funded by another country - it would be that country's achievement rather than Pakistans - the person ofcourse would be a great achiever none the less.

All said and done - Congratulations to the dude!

Look at it this way.

The guy would be refused a Professorship in Chemistry/Biochemistry in an Indian university because his degrees are in Physics!

bharat: ok, Please calm down..and refrain from name-calling. Pakistan disowned the one Nobel Lareate it produced..I think it is better to own those who have any connection with the subcontinent, rather than disown them because they have embraced another nationality/religion etc. Congrats to the person and his team for doing a service to humanity.

ambibambi: give bharat a break...at least the guy was BORN in India and therefore Indian by birth. The heading says 'Indian wins', not 'India wins'...

All this post needed was some CONGRATULATORY MESSAGES on this greatest of achievements. But for some people being what they are here is my reply.

He attended Indian Universities for his Higher Education before moving to USA for Research.

By the criteria you are suggesting, most of the Chowky Pakistanis are from USA with US citizenship then they have no right to call themselves Pakistanis and talk about Pakistan.

I appreciate your zeal but I expected Pakistanis to search for something to criticize INDIAN WINS NOBEL post. You did it with stating that Mr Venkatraman is American and has nothing to do with India.

Please Apply the same scale to Expat Pakistanis also who have got their Higher Education from Pakistan and went to USA for Phds or Jobs.

Please take note that you miss spelled "Mr Venkatraman" in you comment if it is intentional then I can understand if it is not then please take note.

For some half brain Pakistani Chowkies who disparage Indians especially South Indians with tribal level Pakistani racial comments please take note that Mr. Venkatraman is a South Indian and is one of several Nobel Laureates that India has produced.

And your comment " Africa can claim that all Nobel Prizes " is totally illogical to the present context.

Dear Bharat Bhai,
I really, really want to agree with atleast one of your posts in order to show Indo-Pak solidarity, yet you never give me the chance by posting factually incorrect information.

Mr. Vankatraman is an American of Indian origin who has won the Nobel prize - he didnt win it either IN India or FOR India.

By your logic, Africa can claim that all Nobel Prizes so far have been won by African people as apparently all of us originate from Africa.

Please - check your posts for logical sense before posting. I would personally greatly appreciate it!
