Is there GOD?

Posted: Oct 19, 2009 Mon 08:40 am     Views: 181    Interacts: 10

QUOTE:

1) What is an atheist?

An atheist is someone who does not think there is a god.
Atheism has no set of common beliefs. But prominent secular thinkers generally agree on pursuing the common good on the basis of compassion, and the advancement of science to increase our knowledge about the world.

2) Why do atheists not believe in God?

Because there is no evidence for God. The best that can be said for the proposed evidence is that God is one possible answer among other possibilities. But mostly, the proposed evidence is speculative, insufficient, and self-contradictory.

3) Are we not supposed to have faith?

The problem with faith is one can have faith in anything. If we don't use evidence as the criteria by which we choose what to believe, then reality becomes a preference. Obviously, reality is not always what we want it to be, so faith is an invalid basis for belief.

4) How can you know there is no God?

We can't. But we can't really KNOW fairies don't exist either. That's not a reason to believe in them, is it? It's all about considering the evidence, evaluating the claims, and making the reasonable judgment.

5) Then where did the world come from?

We don't know that it came from something. And if it did, we don't know that this thing is a god or an intelligent being.

6) How could such a sophisticated world not be the result of an intelligent creator?

If a sophisticated thing requires a creator, then who or what created the sophisticated creator? If we don't need a creator for the creator, then we don't need a creator for the world. Logically, we can't have it both ways.

7) Is atheism dogmatic?

Like all people, some atheists may be dogmatic, and some are open-minded people who simply have an opinion that could be right or wrong.

8) If atheists are wrong, won't they go to hell?

And if Muslims are right, Christians go to hell. If Catholics are right, evangelicals go to hell. The idea that life is a religious test, or that someone deserves eternal punishment for believing the "wrong" things or having the "wrong" opinion, may indicate that God and hell were invented to instill fear and control people.

9) What about the Bible?

The Bible contains stories about a talking snake, a magic staff splitting the sea, and people getting out of their graves and walking around. There is no evidence for any of those mythical-sounding stories, and no reason anyone should take them seriously. Many ancient texts have similar stories, so the Bible is not unique in that respect. The Quran is worse.

10) Don't people need God to be good?

Being good out of fear of God or hell is not moral but rather cowardly and immature. One would hope that people don't need a "commandment" from a god to refrain from killing and stealing. Historically, both believers and non-believers committed atrocities, and today, some European countries with predominantly atheistic populations have lower teen pregnancies and homicide rates than the United States, which has the largest religious population in the West.""

meenug: I applaud your efforts, but please realize that the religious fanatics are doing exactly the same: saving people's souls from going to hell....you, then, become no different than them!

1. "Atheism has no set of common beliefs. But prominent secular thinkers generally agree on pursuing the common good on the basis of compassion, and the advancement of science to increase our knowledge about the world."

above is self-contradicting. Also, pursuing common good is not the hallmark of just atheists. This sound apologetic.

2. Many accepted concepts in physics are theoretical and are accepted not based on evidence, but only because they weave a theory which may answers otherwise some unanswerable questions.

3. This statement begs the question what is meant by 'Reality' and by extension what anyway is meant by the word 'God'. A being similar to human being but with more characteristics - that is where I think the whole problem in this kind of argumentation lies. We need to check our frame of reference.

4. Just as you can know there is God.

5. Creator / design argument will never solve this problem. In fact no argument will solve that problem. But 'knowing' happens not solely through the medium of reason and argumentation.

6. Same as 5.

7. Generally speaking, ratio of dogmatic atheists is no less than ratio of fanatic religiosits. That is in fact quite revealing.

8. No comment.

9. Bible is more than stories and myths. And so is Quran. Mythical language is language of mysticism which no dogmatist (religious or atheist) understands and therefore cannot see the real value of those words.

10. No they don't. To make people good again was not the reason for evolution of religious experience / thought. The fountain-heads of each religious traditions were trying to teach the path of spiritual development which they themselves came to know. The forms of religion we see now are later developments weaved around the legends of those founding fathers and are adapted to cater to the political, social and cultural needs. The real core of spirituality has been buried under the layers of ignorance. Part of problem is the vocabulary and frame of reference.

rhussain logic can not be complemented by faith or vice versa. if you mix black with white resultant color will be anything but white, even alittlebit of faith destroys logic becuase faith is a unverified thing and clearly antilogic

####Just keep it up and leave others with their Faith####

There! you talked like a true atheist..."You keep you blind faith and leave me alone with my logic". Just keep it up and leave others with their Faith. For some people logic is not enough, it doesn't answer everything for them so they have Faith to complement it. Leave them with their Faith (no matter how irrational) and criticize only if their Faith interferes with your life. Don't be mean meenug..I know you mean well!

####a modern day oliver stuck between logic and faith.#####

Faith is an act of mental destruction. If there is no evidence for a claim, then accepting it is irrational. It is more likely to be false then true.

You keep you blind faith and leave me alone with my logic.

####People want to belong why some one belongs to Congress or Bjp or Yankes or Lakers There are equal number of people swearing against you being such a loser Aethist is also group#####

Agreed whole heartedly!

Just as George Bush senior hated brocolli, I hate biiter gaurd, Wasim Jaffer hates pork, or Sonia Gandhi loves beef. Many men many minds. But what is decisive and crucial issue here is to give preference n reasoning to ideology of peace, so that we avoid future wars, based on what we have seen in the past crusades.

Most important and mysterious questions for us to ponder are: Why Muhammad, the prophet of God, needed to insist/ask people to fight/kill fellow people violently? And why did he lure Islamic believers that they will get Jannat el-Ferdous if they kill kaffirs?

Why on the other hand, another Prophet of the same God Jesus Christ said, “He who live by the sword will die by the sword” or “If you get slapped on your right cheek then give your left cheek for the another slap.” Why Jesus asked people to conquer the hearts of enemies by their love?

Why Mahatma Gandhi did asked people not to attack/kill the enemies but to tolerate all tortures? Was Gandhi or Jesus a better person than the omnipotent who goes by the name Rahman-ur-Rahim (Kind and forgiving)?

Your move.
