It is an understatement to say that oil is the engine of world economy. While most of us have until recently felt the impact of oil only on our transportation and our heatings. But just look around and you will notice that most of what you have around you was made possible due to oil too. the oil painting in your office, your plastic water bottle, heck even the plastic of your laptop was made possible by petroleum. The condoms and KY jellys you use also have petroleum as its base...
It is because of oil that this earth is managing to sustain 7 billion people today. Take away oil and this planet cannot sustain more than 700 million people. In other words, ALL of our prosperity, advances in sciences, literature, and nutrition etc have been made possible due to the subsidies given to the humanity in the form of cheap fossilized (but finite) energy resources.
With this said, I predict that 21st century will be an era of war, poverty, and hunger due to pressure on earth's resources, including oil and water. Oil and water dont mix, but in 21st century they would. It takes 1 million liter of oil to produce 4 million liters of water in desalination plants. Which means this water resource for many countries is feasible only until there is oil and is cheaply available.
Hence I concur with President Ahmedinejad when he says that given its importance of to the world economy, and its finite reserves, oil at $130 is too cheaply priced. I also concur with Iran and other countries in their drive towards nuclear energy. With oil reaching its end, we will be entering an era of energy apartheid. Those with alternative energy resources will be able to control those who dont (so fuk you "Professor" Hoodbhoy!)
Let the wars begin!
