Kaal Bhayya - it's much more than hold, it is called love and loyalty

Posted: May 5, 2008 Mon 09:21 am     Views: 174    Interacts: 1

{"One of the four most fascinating things about Islam is the absolute hold it exercises on the minds of its adherents. "}

Kaal Bhayya,
You may call it "hold," but I call it "love or loyalty." :(W)
I know you mean well, but allow me to explain.

Islam in a Muslim's mind is a personal bonding between himself/herself and Allah directly. This bond is further cemented by an individual commitment of affection for the Holy Prophet (PBUH). Please read his last sermon at Arafat and you will understand why individual Muslims love him so much.

The real beauty of Islam is manifested when it is "reduced" or, I say "elevated," to the individual level. Despite all kinds of allegations of "forced" conversions, the overwhelming majority of Muslims will never abandon their faith - not for money, not for land, not for fame, and not even to save their own lives.

This explains why for a couple of centuries, Muslims known as Moriscos in Spain, continued to practice their faith secretly during the Inquisition. Most were finally driven out or emigrated to the New World. Love of Islam and the Holy Prophet (PBUH) is genuinely in our hearts and minds. I dismiss the group or herd mentality of "Muslim" societies as both unnecessary and counter-productive. :(W)

{"agreed. I have argued that in Islam, the "church" is internalized within indivdiduals' mind and hearts. So there is no need for separation of church from temporal matters, in fact, no church needs exist outside of one's own"}

Kaaly Bhayya,
Beautifully emphasized! (T)
That is why we don't respect so-called "priests" in Islam - mullahs, maulvis, muftis, etc may be admired for any unique knowledge they may have accumulated, but they are generally despised for trying to institutionalize our faith. The image of a lone person in the desert, kneeling before Allah in prayer, with no audience, no priest, no pressure, no fanfare, and no apparent benefit is the real spirit of Islam. (T)
