I am a journalist and publisher based in Mumbai, and run Frog Books.
Random Thoughts: I, a journalist for the last 15 years, have worked with The Sunday Observer, The Financial Express, Blitz and The Free Press Journal — all Indian newspapers — in senior editorial positions. Presently I run Frog Books, an imprint of Zzebra, a communications company based in Mumbai.
I have (un?)successfully survived a decade in Bombay, the city I loathe and love. I was born in Kerala, the southern state of India, and am a fundamentalist when it comes to protecting Kerala culture, literature and cuisine.
I am the publisher and managing editor of Frog Books, a Mumbai-based publishing house, launched in March 2003. It has, so far, brought out 30 books.
In 1994, I had co-authored (with Supriya Madangarli) one book in English titled `Narmada Diary`, and has published a collection of poems in Malayalam, my mother tongue. Two of my latest books in English, as an editor, have been `The Rape of News: The Ethics (or the Lack of it) of Selling Editorial Space` and Urban Voice: Essays from the Indian Subcontinent.
I have acted in street plays, wrote screenplays, and painted and sculpted some vague artforms when I was young. I was associated with a radical left-wing movement, something I consider as a joke now. My interests are writing, reading, journalism, whisky (at times toddy), cinema, the Internet, lazing and fooling around, living dangerously. And I can be contacted at poolani@rediffmail.com.
Favorite Reading: One Hundred Years of Solitude, 1984, The Plague
Favorite Writers: Marquez, Camus, Orwell, Lhosa, Waugh, Kundera, Tom Wolfe, Vaikom Muhammed Bashir, O V Vijayan, M P Narayana Pillai, VKN, Ramachandra Guha
