I agree that a market study and market research is very important before launching anything....whether it is a channel or another kind of product. I also agree that most of the channels don`t have enough material to run and they soon run out of ideas. This is when the quality starts deteriorating. However, having said that, I believe there are some good programmes as well and I only hope that they stay that way.

I also believe that we need training schools for producers, actors, directors etc to refine their raw talent.

Regards.

Re: # 11

Define qualification?

BTW- I have the insight on know who is sleeping with who, just ask Geo`s owner why did he had to marry his secretary?

What qualifies the ``Nam Nehad Producers`` of what you call `flourishing industry` besides having the money to finance.

The reason every Ragaak, Asraf and Jubaidah [Razzak, Ashraf and Zubaida ;-) ] is ``flourishing`` because most channels were open without any market study or if they did they thought oh well w will deal with it when we get there. We are not accountable to anyone.

Would you open a cement factory if you can not find raw material and buyers to buy?
So why would you open a channel without having enough material to broadcast 24X7X365?

When these channels start broadcasting they realized Oops! We need to find material and that is when ``industry started to flourish``.

I am not against the ``industry`` I just wish they use common sense and produce quality in terms of story, acting, direction, sounds, cinematography etc. etc.

My 2 Cents!

Rashed,

I am not upset, instead disappointed. In hindsight what PTV has produced back in 80’s looks really good. Probably most PTV employees do not want to leave PTV for these dime a dozen channels because they like their pension plans.

Let’s hope for the best, eventually only the good ones (hopefully) will survive.

Regards!

faylasuf....thanks for the comments and yes I do agree with you to some extent that at the end of the day if you have what it takes then u`ll make a difference. However the `mafia` tries its best to create an obstacle for the natural process of new talent rising up, to take place. By the way when you say that the Pakistani pop industry and Indian film industry are comparable and have similarities....could you please spell them out?

:)

Hi all

I was jst goin thru the articl n had to stop after reading rashed`s comments..

``everything, including art is becoming extremely commercialized``

..let me thinK about ...about the accros border FILAM industry..hmm..oh Ok they do have ``bollywood`` and its really goin places! now let me ask u.. bout the existence of Mafia in indi film indstry...youd say to ur self..hmmm yea its very much there!

.. when talkin bout the huge volume of business or the quality(yes its D-batebl).. Even though v cant really compare it..i v sum how started comparin the paki pop industry(which is comin out of infancy now) with the indi film industry..an u know wht...it has similarities

..mafia or no mafia..if u v got wht it takes...u ll definetly make a difference

Now coming towards few more interesting comments...yes m talkin bout words of wisdom from one of our Pardesi chowkies

``As far as singers or musicians (if you want to call them) they are the most pathetic of all``

...i wz a bit shocked...i really respect persnl opinion..i can understand your feelings if you are talkin bout a specific genre or individual..and m not being bias...but come on! do you really/honestly think like that!

peace

p.s. hey pardesi..r u really ``pardesi``?
if u R or R not.. do u really knw whts happenin..do u really feel dt u qualify to post negative comments about a flourishin industry!

P.P.S. naahh m not part of ne mafia nor am i a singer/musician/director/producer/vj/stylist etc etc

Pardaisi....you seem to be as upset about the problems inherent in our entertainment industry as I am. What makes it worse is that we really do have so much talent but these few people that want to be at the forefront continuously, just don`t give any new talent a break. This is the basic problem in attitude in Pakistan. You have to give room to as many people as possible to flourish and that is what will ensure the prosperity of any industry. Hopefully things will change thought...InshAllah.

asadikhan.....Thank you for appreciating my article.......Unfortunately I am not comfortable with giving my e-mail address out. Kindly post any queries you may have here and I shall be more than happy to address them. Thank you.

Fariha,

I know you did not name names but it sounds like Humayun Saeed. Talk about over exposure, he seems to be in every drama (which should be called soap opera by the way) on Geo and ARYDigital I don’t know about the rest of the channels as I can not get them where I am.

As far as singers or musicians (if you want to call them) they are the most pathetic of all. I mean come on people will throw tomatoes on them if they try to sing on track. What happened to live music? Good or bad let us decide

Memon people have certain way of looking at business. When they entered into music and broadcasting I knew that was the end of it until nature takes its course.

Bo Paiso Jo Faido bah!
Hanay Hul

My 2 cents!

No Omar...it is probably the same everywhere but since I know more about the local market...I thought I should restrict my comments to it alone. I just get deppressed when I realise that everything, including art is becoming extremely commercialized. The spirit of it is being killed. Furthermore monopolosing the market and exploiting talent is in abundance.

Kerouac....I was watching the 48th Grammy Awards and the word ``y`all``` stuck in my head...so i kind of used it in my comment here :)

Re: # 4

This is something very southern American in saying `y`all`. I, of course, heartily approve.

Couldn`t have put it better myself. And being the sly insider that you are, I trust your judgment on this matter far more than I would do anyone else`s! Hoping to see more from you.

I think you are right on the dot. There are monopolies of all kinds in all sorts of social set ups. This is yet another case of `haves` and `have nots` where the more influencial will exercise their power in whatever context that is relevant.

Do keep writing. :)
