The film is set in an early 20th century widows’ asylum where all the widows of the community are incarcerated as they are prohibited by religion to re-marry or live their lives like regular women.

Ms. Mehta is an outstanding critic of social injustice.

That Ms. Mehta couldn`t find a more contemporary theme to lament about so poignantly in today`s India is a great testament to the religous advancement of India which refuses to get stuck to an irrelevant past unlike some of its more unfortunate neighbors. Even without trying very hard, Ms. Mehta can find themes of women abuse, not from medieval 7th Cent AD, but right out of any day`s Dawn or Jang feature.

Raza bhai,

Well put! I watched the movie myself last week and thought it was absolutely great. A sour side is that there are allegations that Deepa Mehta copied the story from a book on a similar subject by a Bengali writer, but hasn`t credited him.

The troubles that Deepa Mehta went through in India only serve to highlight how not all of India is all ``modern-shodern`` and glitzy.. in places like Varanasi and numerous other such places across India, an archaic pattern of thinking and ideology still exists much to the detriment of the country.. whether by vandalising film sets of purportedly ``anti-Hindu`` movies or treating widows like the scum of the earth. However, one hopes that the bad experience of Deepa Mehta will not deter other filmmakers from making movies in India.

Been hearing about this film for a long time. Heard the fundo freaks didn`t allow the film makers to shoot it in Varansi. Where`d they complete it then?
