So true. The sad part is many in this world do not see virtues of America`s engine. Believe me, America is now for a tough innings from South Asia (led by India), and China. That is why Bush in India said ``treat us the way we treat you``. Remember Porus and Alexander... I hope history does not repeat, and India does treat American values well.

Dear H2 (the living embodiment of gas! And I have it from several reputable sites that H2 happens to be ``the universe’s most abundant commodity``)
May I remind you that the #131 was directed to Tahmed mian - chowk’s very own specialty! It is kind of uncouth of you to but-t in, isn’t it?
You know Tahmed mian - I suppose - if you are not sure, look for those trails of tears leading all the way under that table where he is hiding - along with the rest of your cowering compatriots!
Seriously, the way you foolish Pakistanis have been idolizing that charlatan Jinnah - makes one wonder who the REAL ``kafirs`` of the subcontinent are!!!
I decided to take pity on you guys and help you out! Since - being purer than the pure - you have so little exposure to ``bhajans``, I put together the following to help you guys out!
Manto can lead and the rest of the Pakistani chowkies can follow the chorus!
(The Pakistani Aarti)
Om jai Jinnah hare
Swami jai Jinnah hare
Paak jano ke sankat
Paak jano ke sankat
Kshan mein door kare
Om jai Jinnah hare!
Jo lat-ke phal paye
Dukh jeevan bhur ka
Swami dukh jeevan bhur ka
Sukh sampati sub jaye

Praan mite tan ka
Om jai Jinnah hare!
Maat Pitaa Manto ke
Sharan pa-re kiski

Tum bin aur na dooja
Tum bin aur na dooja
Aas kare woh jiski
Om jai Jinnah hare!
Tum khate the murgaa
Tum khaa-te the soo-arr
Swami khaa-te the soo-arr
Oopar se Rum boa-tal

Rah Rah ke ghat-ke
Om jai Jinnah hare!
Tum katu-taa ke sagar
Mus-lim palan karta

{ .. It is this very attitude of complacency that concerns me .. }
OK, I will keep worrying about it :).
Seriously, let’s not judge America by what individuals talk here and there and go by the track record of the nation. America has helped Russia in setting up free economy and lot more was done for Japan and Germany after WW2. Americans never shy away from competition since they believe in win/win approach. I bet with you there must be hundreds of American companies that are making money from Russia’s growth in the energy sector. Of course there will be more construction in China, Russia and India since they do not have the infrastructure that other western countries take for granted. No big deal there.
Growth anywhere in the world is good for everyone as long as:
a) Markets are open and we all can compete for resources and finished goods. Look, Honda and Toyota have captured the markets here and we are driving around their cars.
b) No one is allowed to clog the resource pipelines.
It’s the second reason why Jihadis are upset at us since we have become, by default, the enforcers of this discipline. It’s a dirty job with heavy price but some one has to do it.
With that, let’s pay tribute to our service men and women on this Memorial Day weekend.
Long live America!

Rare Powerhouse Under the Sun
An Environmental Conversion In Arlington Adds To the Area`s Tiny Solar Brigade
Last week, Hanis and Warnecke stood on the roof, observing the solar crew from Standard Solar Inc. of Gaithersburg and LBA Renewable Energy Systems Inc. of Beallsville, Md., carefully load the blue panels on the shingled roof. (The two companies are merging under the Standard Solar name.)
Occasionally, Hanis helped hoist some materials farther up the 40-degree rooftop while her husband documented the family`s step toward energy independence with a digital camera.
``We figure with teenagers, our hot water consumption is going to go up by 50 percent,`` joked Warnecke, 51, a systems consultant for McLean-based Mitre Corp.
The photovoltaic and hot water systems will set the couple back $25,000, even after the $2,000 federal credit for each of the installations.
The family spends about $1,500 a year for electricity and $600 for hot water. Those bills should dwindle to around $1,000 and $150 respectively, according to representatives of the solar crew.
Even so, it will take a very long time for the couple to recoup their investment. The Hanis-Warneckes calculated that they would make back their cost for the hot water system ($5,000) in six years and the photovoltaic system ($20,000) in 22 years, although they now expect the break-even point to come sooner with the way the bills are going up lately.
But then again, saving money was never the driving factor, Warnecke said.

Re #95 Mantolives,
Re: the Family Law Ordinance 1961.
That`s a nice progressive law.
But wasn`t it enacted by a dictator just like the Hudood Ordinance?
Would you like throwing it out along with the Hudood Ordinance and start from scratch on both counts when we have a real elected parliament?

We are indeed living in interesting times. Some of the preliminary engineering evaluation for energy saving activities has revealed the following:
1. Solar energy: Installation cost is approximately $10 per watt. Without city rebates, installed cost is too high for regular Joe Schmuck the homeowner.
2. Wind power is the next best alternative, which is approximately $1.5M for 1 MW. Wind generators must be located at locations with high wind energy, far away from cities. This would require additional cost of power transmission line. Taking away the $195 B subsidy given to the oil industry could generate substantial interest in this clean renewable energy.
3. Nuclear power is a viable solution, but requires absolute control of how to dispose off the waste.
4. Hydrogen fuel cell technology could be achieved in smaller boutique solutions.
5. Bio-fuels from corn, woods, waste etc. looks very promising. This could raise the price of food commodity. Americans could argue between food versus fuel, and which is more important for standard of living.
6. Savings from energy usage is enormous. Just savings from electrical usage could be as high as 15%. Further savings could be achieved from HVAC consumption.
7. Living closer to civic centers of the city and reducing urban sprawl could further provide substantial savings in energy consumption.
8. Getting rid of the fossil fuel addiction should be everyone’s first priority..... (even Walmart is jumping on this bandwagon)
Respectfully submitted,

{ .. This experience has revealed to me that the U.S. innovates while others look at.}
Anil Sahib, you made my day. If we truly stay at the forefront of innovation, that’s great news for us, and the world in general. This just proves that:
a) We are the best integrators of various ideas - new technologies, production, marketing etc. Our products make money and globally people love it, adopt it and we are thus the change agent for good. The list goes on and on – PC, OS, Google, Internet, iPod, eBay etc etc. No wonder our distracters are so envious :).
b) We do not care where the ideas originate; we grab the essence of it and convert it to viable products. Example – I think it was a british guy who built the initial version of internet in late 70s.
However, I still believe that as the world gets smarter and bolder in terms of financing initial startups and integration of different disciplines, our poorer standards of education at the secondary school levels (math and sciences) will hurt us. So far we have been lucky with Asian immigrants and question is - will it be true tomorrow.
I keep harping upon it like a broken record. I sincerely hope that my concerns are unfounded and this lovable and fair world sheriff will stay strong to keep some sense of order around rough neighborhoods.

[To the Chowk Panel of Distinguished Economists:
and what do you make of this? (picture)]
Mian Tauheed,
Thank you for asking!
I believe that of the two individuals shown in the picture:
(1) One is a woman and the more photogenic. (The other is of unknown sexuality.)
(2) The same individual is seen ``holding it`` and is perhaps better at that art than the other one shown in there who could never ``hold`` it!
(3) Only one of them has not (in all probability) done incalculable damage to the subcontinent in general and the subcontinental Muslims in particular! Also, she is probably not a lying charlatan, either!

Why don`t you ask and learn from Military and Business Strategists what rearguard actions mean? You may learn something.
