Nabeel,
Interesting article. On my alumni email list, a similar topic was posted..
What you think is the reason students don`t go into politics ?
I think manyt students wont be interested in poltics in Universities as they worked hard to get right degree so they can live their own dreams--nice job etc.
Secondly why we need Universities to get future politicians who are well educated and sincere to people they represent ?
Studying USA Caucus system is very interesting. I mean a person can convince a Caucus, electorates and then get party nomination and go for elections..
He/ She has to convince people about his/ her leadership, vision and it is work..but that is what is needed...
looking forward to see your comments..

This was a very interesting analysis. One of the reasons that private universities are able to thwart the politicization (gangsterization?) of their institutes is their ability to expell students, which is something that is relatively harder to do in public universities.
I personally studied at Quaid I Azam University Islamabad and during my session 1997-99, system there was a very strong culture of ethnic politics, where the student body was divided into different councils. The reason for it is the quota system, but I want to make a point that these ethnic councils did not have any political connections or flags.
Fights would break out both on the campus as well as in the boys hostel. Even the different buildings of hostels were divided according to ethnicity.
Students could get away with almost anything like carrying guns, or starting fights during classes. Despite the involvement of the police and various FIRs, I dont know of anyone who got expelled.
I think it is for this reason that being a part of a political group in a public university is like being part of a gang and the membership is used to enforce ones one personal agenda.
