I think that modus operandi does exist. Hamas is an elected govt. now. If they recognized Israed in its pre-1967 borders, negotiations could begin on the forgotten roadmap.
Urstruly#256:
In my earlier post, I had acknowledged that the causes of the Islamist movement are political, so I do not have any disagreement with you on that score. Even now, the US is backing dictatorial regimes, such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt and dictatorship-lite of Pakistan. Unfortunately for Bush, the results of democratic experiments in places like Algeria, Palestine and Iraq have not been to their liking, so there is no incentive for them to keep pushing for democracy elsewhere in the Muslim world.

And now this pseudo-i don`t know-what, who keeps harping abput globalisation, does not know that it is dead. That it died in Cancun with no hope for revival.

I don`t know what`s going on here... but I think it`s the unintended consequence of chowk-staff banning arjun_macaca, the paki tormentor-in-chief... With nobody to whip their a$$es - pakis are having a good time here... a little too much good time... so they are talking to each other more often, expressing their feelings, completing each other`s thoughts and sentences... before we know it - they are falling in love and moving to Boston [some to peshawar] to get married....
HP & Godot have already switched teams and are having a reception in Pune [off all places]... Zeemax and GT are into serious dating... I heard Urstruly is getting engaged to one of his Gilmans... Only Tahmed32 is safe - he wisened up at time and he is doing good...
At this rate - we will have a bunch of gays running around here... not that anything is wrong with that... but we don`t want chowk to be known as a f23g hang-out. do we?
Chowk-staff - see what you have done..... :)

Hamidm: You are too pessimistic. The socio-economic undercurrents of globalization are vastly more powerful than the surface froth created by three generals-a-leaping and ten mullahs-a-dancing.
General Nasir or Mullah Fazloo - even if they should get their wildest dreams fulfilled and become rulers of Pakistan - would be no more able to shift these undercurrents than King Canute was able to turn back the ocean tides.

``I would like to remind them that after the migration from Mecca, the Muslims were in a constant state of war against Quraish which started with Guerilla warfare and turned into full-fledged combat only when they had gained sufficient strength and sufficiently weakened Quraish. One part of that warfare was attacking the Quraish`s supply lines/logistics in hit and run tactics which these people term as `looting` caravans. The very same disruptions to their supply-routes drew in Quraish into the first real battle at Badar where they were defeated``
Raiding caravans or Ghuzu was the Hijaz tribal tradition which was practiced till the early twentieth century and was stopped only when black gold (oil) was discovered courtesy white satan. These raiding parties had no qualms in attacking Haji/Umra pilgrims and demanded their compensation or be attacked.

``Arafat used the Palestinian identity to motivate a violent resposnse whereas Hamaz and Hezbollah are using religion for the same purpose. ``
I think your comment about Hamas and Hizbollah is based on a vicious myth of which their enemies get a lots of milage off of. At the end of the day every Muslim movement in its essence is essentially a nationalistic movement. One must ask this question from oneslef ` if chechens were not oppressed by Russians would they still be fighting Russians`, or `if there were no occupation of Palestine would Palestinians still be fighting Jews?`
But there is an exception in case of Al-Qaida. Though it has its basis in Saudi Nationalism, its goals have risen above the territory of Saudi Arabia. This is purely an ideological movement which does not seek territory or the integrity of a territory (as compared to Hamas, Chechens, Hizbollah, Kashmiri freedom fighters, and other movements in Thailand, Philipine, or Kurdistan for that matter) but it seeks an idelogical unity that would transcend physical borders. Had West been fair and just to Muslim world the minor regional conflicts would have not mutated into a global movement of resistence. And now a point has come when not only bloggers but responsible memebers of world community are calling this conflict a Third World War or a Clash at Civilizational level.

DM,
I think you missed HE`s point when he said ``At present, there is no peaceful modus operandi for a just solution to Middle East problem.``
He was talking about the modus operandi for a just solution, and not the just solution itself.
You may want to rethink your argument in light of above.

I hope you are serious. If so, then let me ask you two simple questions? Are you afraid of these guys? Do you think that Pakistan is Afghanistan? Look you got to have balls to be a liberal. If you do not have the guts then you are not a liberal.

HE#219:
``At present, there is no peaceful modus operandi for a just solution to Middle East problem.``
There may not be a ``just`` solution but Arafat and Barak almost arrived at a practical solution. The problem, however, is not just in the reaction being violent but also what forces are used to motivate even a violent response. Arafat used the Palestinian identity to motivate a violent resposnse whereas Hamaz and Hezbollah are using religion for the same purpose. This is why Arafat`s movement (or George Habash`s even more militant faction) were never associated with Islam even though they had the same objective.
bylleya#228:
``I have never quite figured out what difference the motivations or vehicle behind terrorism makes. If I get killed by someone who uses their ethnicity, political belief, nationalism, or religion as his motivation, what difference does it make? I am still dead.``
It may not make any difference to the dead but one cannot say the same thing about the living because the reaction is governed by how people perceive the nature of terror. Let me give you the example of what is the hot news in Canada right now, the mayhem at the Dawson College in Montreal yesterday. From the name, Kimveer Gill, and his pictures, it appears that the suspect in this case is of Punjabi Sikh Indian background. Yet, I do not think that the reaction would be against either of those groups because the suspect used Gothic culture and not his religion or ethnic background as his defining identity.

GT,
....... you are a good man with noble ideas and i am sure you mean well ............ but do you really think that if these people get a two-third majority in the parliament and manage to install javed nasir as the chief of staff, that you and other liberals will ever get another shot at your agenda ? ........... your great grand children might, but you will probably end up as the object of entertainment at the fortress stadium after friday prayers ............. i seriously doubt you will be able to survive the stoning and go on to ``oppose the state individually or through collective action`` ............ the mistake that liberals make is to assume that these people, who are driven by the demons of faith, are like ordinary men ........... if liberals think that they can make a `deal` with the devil they will surely end up in hell .......... so what is the answer ? more guantanamos and daisy cutters ............

Mohar,
You are quite right. I mean her single-minded one track obsession with the young barrister from Lahore doesn`t leave any energy for the others. The only one-on-one interaction that she carries on is the incessant tangling with the young barrister. That leaves the other suitors out in the cold - trying to complete their sentences. :) Haven`t you seen all those macaca nature shows?
