whenever i read NFP, one thing just hits me hard and no matter how much i want to like him, he is an attention seeking ``wannabe`` rebel, who is only known because he can put down `slick` ``angrezi``, and ridicule people. Sure i can go stand in a chowk and start ridiculing people around me , i will be pretty well known in a jiffy wouldn`t i, he is just one of those people who believe in ``badnaam jo hoon gai tou kia naam na ho ga``
he is a total waste of time.
he is a total waste of time.

But these are all `Noora Kushties`. What will the god do when both sides pray to the same god for victory. It is the characteristic of Islam to introduce show-business (riakaari) even in religion in the shape of `munafiqeen`. The cricket is perhaps the best vehicle to exhibit this and bring a bad name to their Allah by their defeat as He does not seem to be much versed in this satanic game.

Re: # 43
soon sports would turn into a religious battlefield with every team invoking and offering prayers to their gods before embarking upon a match..............this is stupid..............religions should be kept out of sports if we are to stop turning it into an expression of religious upmanship........infact ICC should have a uniform code of conduct for every team..........
and please.
No public offering of prayers on the field!!!

A good article indeed!
But Mian NFP you have omitted the cricketers altogether from the list of entertainers. They are the latest in mixing islam with cricket despite the fact that the most vocal paky mulla, Dr Israr, vehemently condemned this game and tried to get it banned even during zia regime. As it is, the mincing of `inshaallah, mashaallah` in his talk by inzi and `musallization` of the newly acquired islam by usaf by showing his hinds in the Oval does not appear to bode well both for the cricket and islam.

. . .todays pop stars seem so helpless and clueless because they all grown during zias time and cant figure out how important it is to repeal laws like hudood ... nfp always had a problem with them and will continue to and as apparent in this article very few if none will ever understand his point of view as they just close mindedly shoot him down as atheist ... -- patwari
You have a point, but I wonder if NFP himself isn`t responsible for some of the closed-mindedness at times. What gets me about his conversations with these so-called common citizens is that if they were so concerned about the Hudood Ordinance, and what it endangers as ``common citizens`` then they would want to do something as entertainers, rather than saying ``this is not the work of entertainers.`` Khaak maiN this is not the work of entertainers. . . these people are just concerned with saving their own asses and corporate sponsorship. Gutless wonders.
And I was about to take issue with the last part of your statement, but what you are saying is correct, some of them do just shoot him down as being ``atheist``, but this issue shouldn`t be turned into one of atheists vs. believers, or rather non-believers vs. believers. . . and though I think NFP falls into that us vs. them trap himself that is not what he`s trying to point out here.

Paracha Sahib, you should come to New York man, I will show you the Pakistani ‘real’ artists, and not Kachra like the ones you mention in your writeup. My Guruji tells me that there are two type of people in this world, Suray and Besuray, the artists you have met in Karachi are Besuray. There is not a single decent musician or singer left in Pakistan. The kids of today couldn’t tell Sur from Leh. Zia butchered the music of Pakistan. You may have a point that Artists are not doing enough to challenge the current stagnation of culture and deterioration of civil society in our country, but given their talent (lack of), is there any wonder, why?

Excellent article, NFP. I`d given up on you when went bonkers with that hyper-experimental stuff of yours. So tell us already, was the gentleman Junaid?

zia just expanded what mullah parties had been shouting about during their campaign against bhutto in 70s ... and todays pop stars seem so helpless and clueless because they all grown during zias time and cant figure out how important it is to repeal laws like hudood ... nfp always had a problem with them and will continue to and as apparent in this article very few if none will ever understand his point of view as they just close mindedly shoot him down as atheist ...

What was I doing at a discussion forum?
Well, back in the good old days I was, for some odd reason, always being invited to speak at various NGO meetings and book launchings. Even though I almost always wrote down the speeches, I hardly ever delivered them. In fact, on most occasions someone else would read my speech, as I got busy doing the usual, as in looking for holes and corners to steal a smoke and observe. One can say, I only spoke, when spoken to. Something I certainly can’t say about my writings, now can I? :)
Rgds,

From all accounts, up until the end of 1960s, and to a lesser extent until the end of 70s, urban Pakistan was a quite a happening place.

Hudood is the reality and a logical culmination of putting religion as the ``foundation`` of a modern nation state`s constitution!!
Pakistanis wanted it.................the mullahs have done their job...........so why complaint??
