Re: # 45

is it `bull` when a poor black guy from harlem can`t get a heart bypass as his insurance doesn`t cover it and medicare or whatever crap system the US has won`t help him either? so let the nigger die, who cares, hanh, why should my tax dollars go to help those lazy coons?

this kind of yankee thinking is really nauseating.

or:

oh, i am a bright pakistani girl but not bright enough to get a scholarship but my parents have 6 other kids to support so can`t pay the fees for me to go to uni. what shall i do? i know, i won`t be able to go. how fair is that?

in europe, education is free--or at most you have to pay the govt back AFTER you`ve graduated.

of course my dad has another thesis: those who mess around and don`t work hard, preferring to sell drugs are `kammi` and `kammi jithay vee chala jaaye, kammi hii honda eh`.

:D

And yes I am obviously wrong about Domeli. I think someone said it was in India. But obviously you know better because you`re from that District.

stuka, i agree most indians are doing well in the UK. I really don`t know what it is about
most pakistanis that puts us at the bottom of the education ladder. it is sad. i am a teacher and even in school there is a difference. most of the pakistanis have this lazy attitude (similar to the blacks) and don`t think it is cool to work hard. those who do work hard are ostracised!
the only reason i can think of is that they are offspring of uneducated parents and dont value education. i don`t know. it is a vicious circle. these school drop outs can then fall prey to the extremists like HT since they haven`t learnt to think for themselves.

agreed, america is better for the educated and the well off but a system should be judged by how it treats its weakest and poorest members.

thats bull, there is a lot more of small business opportunities in any major US cities compared to european cities. These are the kind of businesses that are the lifeblood of poorly educated new immigrants.

For instance do you think the Pakistani`s and Nigerian`s selling replicas of the Eiffel tower outside the Gallerie Laffeyette on Blvd Haussman have any chance of moving to a small store inside a mall and selling their wares?

In the US that`s exactly what happens.

there is this perception that most pak-brits are on dole, nothing can be further from the truth. UK stats 16% of pak-brits are on dole, or to put it another way 84% have jobs.

it`s getting difficult for unskilled folks to get jobs because 600k poles have arrived within last 2years, i believe they are very hard workers and employers prefer them so it`s tough times ahead for paks.

Hamidm, I defer to your assertion as far as `` pakis are not willing to work their way up from the bottom ... but I do not agree with ``and should be appointed as managing directors and chief inspectors the minute they land at heathrow and jfk .........``

It is evident that the best that ordinary Paks can do in US is to run menial businesses. To break out is a huge effort. Skin colour comes in when you`re able but not the correct colour.

Oh there more stuff I forget:

- the whole fake Fendi purse, fake perfume business is Pakistani dominated with lots of small stores in the malls.
- Pakistani`s dominate the the small jewellerly, trinket carts in the malls.

all typical small entrepreneurial stuff.

stuka,
the welfare system is for all citizens not just immigrants. i bet you that most of the blacks, hispanics and working class whites in the US would also wish that they had a EU style free welfare, education and health systems.

agreed, america is better for the educated and the well off but a system should be judged by how it treats its weakest and poorest members. that is why it is a shame that my country, the UK, is becoming more like the US when it should try to be like Sweden!

lets see in Houston:

- all 3 bollywood movie theatre`s are Pakistani owned
- you would be hard pressed to find a non-Pakistani owned cellphone store, dish-network agency, convinience store in certain parts of town (although there are lots of Indian`s also in these businesses)
- there are more Pakistani and Indo/Pakistani restaurants in town than you can wave a stick at (btw the Indo/Pakistani is a dead giveaway)
- some of the most prominent travel agencies are Pakistani owned
- a major Mitsubishi dealership is Pakistani owned (he sponsors lots of Pakistani events)
- A major furniture chain is Pakistani owned and employes a whole lot of his brethern. Lots of other small furniture stores are Pakistani owned, competing with the vietnamese, koreans mexicans etc.
- A local councillor is of Pakistani origin
- The Pakistani new years day festivities are the largest in town (I would think much bigger than the Indian one)

The only criticism may be that most Pakistani owned businesses are focussed on the desi community, but this will change with time.

hamidm,

no, pakis work hard but most paki immigrants to the UK are uneducated folk from pinds who can only do work such as taxi driving and bus driving or work in restaurants as waiters (1 in 8 PaKIS in the UK is a taxi driver!) and so cannot rise much above this no matter how much they work as they have to send part of their earnings to feed the rest of the family back in pakistan too. on top of it, due to their illiteracy they are narrow minded and don`t make an effort to mix with the locals. hence the ghetto-isation of pakis in the UK.

those pakistanis who do go to uni and get educated tend not to mix with the other lot i just described. i don`t think this is unique to just pakistanis though. i know, i am one of them and i have v little in common with them. i don`t see how this can change either unless the UK changes its immigration policies and only allows educated people in.

most indians tend to be gujjus who are more highly educated and middle class and so make an effort to mix in. this is my own observation. obviously the above is a gross generalisation and exceptions exist.

interestingly, pakistani GIRLS are doing much better in education than the guys--who all want to be gangstas like Biggie and Tupac.

BTW, pakis like me are considered `coconuts` by the majority since we are not like them!

``what you need to do is to eliminate the welfare program and use that money to put people to work even if it is digging ditches and picking up the trash .``

Why should there be a welfare program for immigrants to begin with? If they can`t find jobs, they can starve to death...that`s usually a pretty good incentive to get a job. Or they can go back to their home country and starve to death there.

``agree it is a god-damn shame that immigrants from pak (and indian punjabis too) who come to europe can`t make it in such a great system as this which look after you from cradle to grave.``

Actually Indian Punjabis are doing quite well in the UK, at ;east based on publicly available Stats. It`s specifically Muslims (that too Pak and Bangladeshi more so than Indian Muslims of Gujerati descent) who are in the economic doghouse.

You may criticize American political policies, but any immigrant who wants to work hard and do well is much better off in America compared to Europe. For those who want to leech off the system, Europe is better.

``domeli, tehsil jhelum, district jhelum, division rawlapindi .``

My ancestral village is Bhaun, Zilla Chakwal...though during partition time it was tehsil Chakwal and Zilla Jhelum,

please don`t compare our civilised European social democratic welfare systems with the money- is-- all --and --who --cares --about-- the-- poor-- people? capitalist American system.

I agree it is a god-damn shame that immigrants from pak (and indian punjabis too) who come to europe can`t make it in such a great system as this which look after you from cradle to grave. amongst educated europeans of all colours and creeds there is a latent disgust at the american system. this is esp. true in the continent but even amongst most middle class brits, there is a good deal of criticism of america. don`t let Blair the Poodle`s obsequiosness fool you into thinking that USA is popular with the great British public.

Just watch any episode of Question Time to find that out!

stuka,

........there is really no benefit - it is like kicking your dog when you have a bad day at the office ........ in any case, good punjabis like you and dost are excluded - when i say indian i am talking about madrasis and other strange tribes .......... i know that tecumseh sherman, pakistan`s biggest hero after jinnah, said that the `only good indian is a good indian`, but i still like to make the distinction
