I`m glad life has taught me my responsibilities --If i were to keep a ``servant`` anyway, he/she would not be called a ``servant`` but rather a `helping hand`. I guess the servants are there to reinforce the idea that ``you do the real job in economy and society while i do the shitty work.`` Babes, the shitty work IS a second shift for many women without servants; consider it `unpaid` labour.
Ahem --we all need to triple think of how we run households.

Nasah,
(start doing all the things yourself )
I wish it would have been as simple as that. There are many children working in shops, factories, mines and above all farms. What do you about them? The only solution is rapid economic growth which would give adults enough wages to keep their kids in school. Sadly, the bane of child labour is not going to go away any time soon.
Regards

Don`t feel bad bibi -- child labor was a curse in the United States 100 years ago -- India and Pakistan have to do some long distance catching up with the civilized world -- and they will one day
for your own contribution -- start doing all the things yourself -- your mother would order that little child servant to do -- for you.
You wrote a touching column -- and you write very well. Keep writing.

Re: # 7
Unfortunately, the answer would have to be yes.
And I can understand why you might call it child labour... but if the parents don`t get money, they`ll take her somewhere else anyway... and, unfortunately, it is not economically feasible to hire another one for the work while paying Tahira too.

as your article displays its the attitude towards education that needs to be changed... this will take time and serious govt. `propaganda` to make a cultural change within our society.
Hence why so many areas are so backward, but slowly people are realizing the value of education, teach one woman in the village and she can go back and teach others.

Zeena and Okhla99:
thanks!!
The only reason illiteracy is so rampant in Pakistan and other Third World countries is that PEOPLE SHIRK THEIR RESPONSIBILTY! If all of us taught a single child in our lives, it WOULD make a difference.

My compliments on an excellent piece.
We all see similar situations occurring with a sickening regularity.
Too bad most of us do not do anything about it.
