To all the ppl who commented, Please read report released yesterday from the UN about childrens welfare. Your precious Western Nations are some of the worst for children to grow up in.

Gawd this is a convoluted read-- it`s all over the place!!

To be sure, there is some merit in what I think is the author`s main contention: that many problems are needlessly medicalized and then over-prescribed in search of solutions. But what is the alternative? I think that once the author dispenses with a certain romantic view he has of children`s happinness levels in the developing world, he would find that many here would benefit from, at the very least, the taking of their problems (which, as a longtime teacher I can attest DO exist) more seriously.

Perhaps in the West, `they` err of the side of over-diagnosis and even over-protection. That`s not altogether a bad side on which to err, IMHO.

I wonder if the author can express his ideas clearly and properly. The writer needs to draft and redraft several times before he should decide to submit.

Sorry to say, but Psychiatrists would likely to say that there is a thought disoreder problem in this article.

Mr Ali, I don`t mean to offend, but I find the article very disorganised and thus difficult to read.
I don`t think though that Western civilisation is to blame at all; I remember depressed and hyperactive children from my own childhood. Needless to say, it went unrecognised, and I am sure the children involved were traumatised.

A term i once read such thinking is responsible for inactivity by some ``FATALISTIC`` philosophy or some people know to make excuses so well that they do not make anything else

I dont think its western civilisation that is bad per sey.
Diseases are genetic or Environmental.
In the industrial sophisticated civilization some person can be stressed out but as the saying goes you dont quit.*

Girte haine shah sawar maidane jang maine
(its only soldiers who get wounded)
Woh tufle kya gire ghutno ke bal jo chale
(if you just sit idle u never hurt)

Demands of western expectations are far greater than 3rd word country but we all want to come to Autralia Europe ,States

Depression in 7 Year Olds

Health issues are bound to be present in every ``civilization``. However giving a pill to 7 year olds in order to cure the issue is pretty humane. Don`t you think Mr. Afaq?

I mean what are the alternative here. Should we follow the ``Middle Eastern civilization`` by strapping suicide bombs to our 7 year olds?

Peace!

Dude - we know over-medication and over-diagnosis is a problem in america - but you don`t have to exaggerate the whole thing and make loaded statements... things ain`t that bad and western civilization is NOT under threat from over-zealous shrinks...
:)

Relax...
