#77 If Hoodbhoy says that Pakistan is a failed state, that does not threaten the security of Pakistan or Pakistanis. But when (as you say below) Hoodbhoy is ``picked up`` by the government for saying this - that is a very real threat to the security of every Pakistani.
Is the security of people living in Pakistan less sacred than the security of the political borders?

tahmed ... do you think Prof. Hoodbhoy would have access to the same priviliged information which a National Security Advisor does?
It`s the same thing as Ward Churchill says 9/11 was an inside job, or Zbigniew Brzezinsky says the same thing ...

[....jinnah and muhammad are long dead and it is time we dumped ``unity, faith and discipline`` and ``allah o`akbar``` for hoodbhoy`s truth, diversity and creativity ........... it makes a lot of sense unless you want to be like gopi - running around in a loin cloth with chattering wooden teeth .....]
Yep - as always Hamid has spoken well, except for the fact that - there was never a Gopi running around in loin cloth... :)
Gopi has already discarded his loin cloths and his equivalent of ``allah o`akbar``` long time back.... and has embraced hoodbhoy`s truth, diversity and creativity with gusto.... so much so that the white man is scared of his job and factories being snatched up by gopi... and chances are - in a few years hamidm and other pakis will end up working for gopi in Michigan...
So get over jinnah and Mo, pubh to both... get cracking on truth, diversity and creativity - that`s the path to enlightenment and survival...

Hoodbhoy is a critic per se. Most often he does it for the sake of it. His U turn on the Indo-US Nuclear deal is a case in point in which he moved away from his much trumpeted paradigm of pacifism and wrote to the contrary. He is forever ready to join any bandwagon that crticises the establishment. He is articulate and can mesmerise the audience with his speech, but fares badly in cross talking seminars, which I happened to attend with him. But we cannot deny that in many ways he also reflects the opinion of Pakistanis however few.
I think even the establishment has stopped taking him seriously.
As for Asma and Najam: they come from a different school altogather. They are the reargaurd of the progressive school who had their wings clipped long ago. They are a reflection of people like Faiz, Jalib and Mian Iftikhar.

Re: # 85
Pakis have been running around with ``unity, faith, descipline`` for quote a while now - with nothing to show for it... they have no unity and no discipline... their faith so twisted and insecure that a 97% muslimness still not enough for them... that`s the bottomline... whether hoodbhoy says it or somebody else - it don`t matter...

Hmm... so looks like only Army and COAS matters in Pakistan.
Everybody else just jumps up and down and allowed/disallowed to
jump up and down as Army and its COAS wishes.

I think even the establishment has stopped taking him seriously.
Even the US State Dept said the same abt Naom Chomsky however many conscientous Americans and progressive thinkers around the wolrd listen these thinkers.
The thinkers themselves just bat an eyelid to this kinda observations. The thinkers are above these people.

I didn`t realise that Hoodbhoy was apparently advocating a slogan opposite to that of Jinnah. I am still wondering what the heck is all the fuss about.
Can`t you have truth alongside faith(faith in truth), diversity alongside unity(unity in diversity) and creativity alongside discipline(the most creative people have submitted themselves to rigors of discipline in their chosen fields to acquire the techniques/skills required to be truly creative, take Hoodbhoy himself for instance).

That`s not true. There is a tremendous amount of freedom to jump up and down as much as one wishes. Army and COAS leave poeple alone for the most part. Comparatively, civilian Prime Ministers are often more vindictive. Bhuttos (both), Nawaz Shareef, and other Pakistani politicians even before them provide excellent examples.
The subject of when a Pakistani journalist gets hammered or when a foreign journalist gets his head cut off is a bit more complex. It has to do with where the core of the Pakistani state lies, and it does not lie (yet?) within the grasp of Pakistani politicians.

First we had faith in self, now we have faith in truth!
Faith is simply faith, sadnaji, and people know extactly what it is. If you told men and women on the street that faith is faith in truth, they may not be well disposed toward you. :)
The rest is dil ko khush karne ki baat.

Dear Yasser:
Don`t you think pluralism in Pakistan will greatly benefit if both visions ``truth, diversity and creativity`` and ``unity, faith and discipline`` are allowed to develop, rather than some Islamic-facist vision of the country.
At this stage pluralism in Pakistan is at a nascent stage, persons like you must encourage the both. Common enemy is else where.
By the way, I also think that your subjective logic can be equally applied to Jinnah too, whose most of the work had been non-legal too.
Does Hoodbouy has convictions and capabilities to lead forces to implement his vision, is more appropriate question.

#82 zeemax: While your faith in the National Security Advisor is commendable, please realize that ``national security`` is a convenient cover to suppress political opposition. National security is best served by openness. Trust me.

Yup, what you say did occur to me. But it seems sad that advocating truth not faith can get a man labelled so negatively when for a significant fraction of humanity both words are virtually synonymous(though they imply very different things to different groups).
